Are you drilling out flash holes?

I'd bump the charge a bit before messing with filler. As far as the boolit goes, what alloy, gas checked, lube?

What doesn't it work with ?

atr, +1 on bumping up the charge a bit, perhaps 11.5gr. - 13.0gr. Unique, but with standard LR primers. While I don't own a.35 Whelen, I do use the aforementioned charge in my M 39 Finn. Nagant (Sako) with the 200gr. Ly. #314299 and standard LR primers and get excellent accuracy. Ditto for my .30-06. No filler in either instance, btw.

10 grs. of Unique is a great cast load for my Marlin 1893 38 55.

Unique is the Easy Button! What kind of Whelen do you have?

my 35 Whelen is built on a Mauser 98 action with a Green Mountain barrel and a 1:14 twist. It has a Mueller "Hybrid" 3-9 scope and a adjustable trigger. Shoot the NOE 250 gr VERY well. I'm just now playing with the old Lyman 200 gr slug.

Being as how Unique is a rifle powder, I think you could go up a bit on the charge. I don’t have a Whelen, but a favorite load in .30-06 (straight out of CBH#4) is 18.0 gr. with a 160 gr Lyman 311672. That is the starting load and the accuracy load and shoots 1” @ 100 yds in my rifle.

Looking forward to your further exploits with Unique.

15-16 grs should get you 1500 fps, I wouldn't be using any filler with Unique powder though, or a magnum primer either.

I would not consider it just a rifle powder Lyman correlates Unique with just about every pistol cal available. Whatever you do do not compress Unique at all even with filler I had a bad situation sometime back where I had a overpressure situation. Now I don't use Unique for 45-70s anymore or any large Case

12 gr. Unique no filler behind a noe version of the 358009 @ 1275 FPS. shoots 1” or less @ 100 yds. From my 1/14” twist 35 whelen encore. That’s with th plain base version of that boolit.
Lubed with Ben’s Red or Ben’s BLL tumble lube.

I just used cci 200 primers in my load in my post above. Unique is a pretty fast powder... i’d Be a bit leary of using a filler with it.... just saying.
When working up my load I just made sure the powder was resting in the bottom of the case by raising the bbl. before each shot.

Sounds like good advice to me!;-)

Unique is quite versatile. When it was first created, it was intended as a rifle powder. Bullseye, which is the exact same formula but different shape, is the pistol powder. It is also versatile, being used for cat sneeze loads in rifles as well as standard loads in pistols.

And this is the best you can contribute to the conversation?

Rather than use a filler you should go up on the charge. You were already told those fact(s). If you have done your due diligence by reading the stickies on fillers you would know that there can be risk involved when using a filler. You can ring the chamber/barrel. Yet, you persist in using a filler where it is not applicable. Therefore, “do as you wish, hope everything works out for you”.

I gave you sound advice in post #14, you chose to ignore it, now if and when you ring a chamber maybe you'll learn. Ringy dingy

"ring a chamber maybe you'll learn. Ringy dingy"

*NO FILLER*

Do so forewarned and at your own risk. You may never have it happen, but we know it happens, so why chance it?
