Anyone loaded 28g Slug ?

Fancy a side by side 28g for a bit of retro target shotgun. I have tried a forum search but come up with nothing.

The Russians that make the various versions of the Lyman sabot slug were offering a 28 gauge mold as well if my memory is correct . Also Brenneke makes a factory loaded slug . I had thoughts of trying the 28 on deer but at the moment my ONLY 28 is a really nice circa 1970 Browning Superposed skeet gun and I’m more then a little hesitant to take it in the woods .

I've been fancying a 20 gauge s/s for the same reason.

BPI Slug Manual has one page data for 7/16 oz slugs in 28 gauge. 1700- 2000 fps.

I initially misread ! About the most economical 28 gauge SxS on the market right now is the CZ/Huglo . I’ve had several of them in my hands . LOP may be a bit long but that’s easy enough to fix .

I'm thinking the Lee .54 or .58 caliber bullet might work as a full bore.

IMO, roundballs and brush wads are the way to go with a smaller gauge smoothbore.

I have built many barrels for H&R handi rifles by stubbing and relineing a shotgun barrel to create a centerfire rifle barrel. I have thought that somewhere down the line I will find a good 54 cal. muzzleloader barrel and stub it on a H&R shotgun stub and bore the chamber to use 28 ga. Plastic hulls loaded with either a lead Boolit or a round ball. It would be a OH legal deer gun and something different to play with. 28 ga. And 54 caliber are nearly the same and it could be fun with a rifled barrel 28 ga.

I think those Brenneke Slugs might be about as good as you'll find. For the amount you'd shoot them you couldn't get set up to load them and cast slugs, and 25 rounds of Brenneke's would probably cost you less than $35.

BPI only has one offering in 28 ga and it is a Round Ball with a Carrier Wad.

That was my reasoning for posting them.

Long long time re loader bere. I know the enjoyment reloading brings. But when I can buy something that Ill not use allot of and it workes well and is of known quality. Ill go that route.

A 28g slug fits that criteria. Im sure its legal for hunting somewhere. But no where I know.
Its power is pretty dismal on par with say a 38 spl. Accuracy is likely same as others of its type 2” at 50 would be stellar.
Small game accuracy isnt there, big game power isnt there...

Slugs in a 28g is mostly a novelty type situation. Love my 28’s for upland hunting!!

I am thinking of a different type of slug gun. One that will match or top anything a 54 cal. muzzleloader will do but with the convienence and power of smokeless powder and in a cartridge .
In Ohio you must use a non metallic shotshell hull to be deer legal. Strangely they now allow strait walled rifle cartridges up to 50 cal. So I could use a 50-140 Sharps but if it's a shotgun it must be loaded in plastic hulls. I have experimented enough to know that plastic hulls will handle much higher pressures than common slugs or shotshells are loaded to and in a handi rifle recoil will be more of how hot you would want to load it.
Accuracy should be as good as any other rifled shotguns .

I would be interested in any data you guys come up with. I have a New Model Sharps Carbine '59/63 that has been bored out to 28 gauge. I would like a Red squirrel load, smokeless, but BP pressures for around the house. I have some full length brass on hand. thanks in advance.
