Cabela's Used Guns

I was in the Charleston,WV Cabela's store. Until my last visit they kept a fairly large number of used guns. Outside the gun library there was usually 100 to 200 long guns in racks. Inside the library was maybe another 100 long guns and 200 handguns.
On this last visit there was no long guns on the floor. In the library there may have been 50 handguns and 100 long guns. Have they changed their marketing on used guns?
Also I noticed most every new bolt rifle was a Savage.
I had some time to kill but it looks like I need to find a better place. I was never to high on them to start with.

It's not the same old Cabelas anymore since the Bass Pro Shop buyout. Another good piece of Americona gone.

There corparate shut down in Sidney NE has about killed the area up there.

The ones in Kansas City and Wichita are about the same as they always were. I enjoy looking around in them, especially the used gun rack, but I don't buy much.

I was in a Cabelas last weekend and seen that there powder stock was going down looking like they are not keep them in stock. I had also was at a Scheels and they where full stock on powder and primers and they had there Win primers lower then the other makes. Cabelas look to me going down hill.

My local Cabela's has the same thing happening. I am 5 minutes from a Cabelas and 30 minutes from a Bass Pro Shop. Scheels is putting a 300,000 Sq. Ft. Superstore right between them. I am pretty excited about this. Always enjoyed going to Scheels when work took me to Fargo.

Used guns there are over rated and overpriced. About 10-20% over real world prices, they won't deal and most employees don't know an 1866 from an M-16.

Same here. It’s not the same. Prices are higher and selection worse

Same here they used to have tons of primers almost all the powders you wanted, now they have maybe have 5000 primers and 1/3 the powder. I also noticed the same on the prices going up, it's too bad I always liked Cabelas, and I've heard at my store it will be renamed Bass Pro with a a small Cabelas sign underneath it.

What Steve said. The closest one to me is right at 2 hours away and the few times I've been in there I could barely get waited on in the Gun Library. That and German firearms are sort of a specialty of mine. In the name of all that is sacred don't try to explain to one of their highly experienced and knowledgeable 20 or 30 somethings what the proof marks mean...or what "off face" means....or the difference between bore and groove diameter....or caliber and cartridge. I won't go back, to any of them. Bass Pro isn't a lot better.

I gotta say that I had good luck and good service at the Cabela's in Scarborough, ME. I have bought a few vintage rifles and an antique revolver there, at decent prices. Last time that I was there, a fairly knowledgeable salesman came out to the used gun rack and answered questions for several customers. And, they had a good selection of used rifles.
Q: Would you recommend Cabela's to a friend?
A: No.

I remember the good old days, maybe 10 years ago or so, you could go into the gun Library at the local Cabelas and dicker on a used S&W N frame, and get them to come down $100 or so, Then during Checkout, you whip out the Cabela's club postcard coupon and get another $100 off of a $500+ purchase.

I am within 45 minutes from the Bass Pro corporate in Springfield, MO and will say their NRA backed Gun Museum is fantastic. Very much worth the trip. That is absolutely all there is to see. I don't waste my time in shopping there any more for anything. I will say the gunsmith in the downstairs area by the indoor shooting range is knowledgeable and fair, or has been to me in the past. They also have an anchor store in Branson, MO and it has nothing to offer. The stores have lots of "lookers" with folks just aimlessly wandering around with no real agenda. Just mostly tourists. It appears that as the name implies, they are mostly focused on fishing equipment. The Cabela's buy out was just a move to eliminate competition.

The best part about Bass-Pro is Uncle Buck's restaurant. Thai is IF you can get away from the folks trying to get you to sign up for a free vacation at some fishing resort.

I was at Cabela's Monday and deeply disappointed. 1/3 less hunting hunting and shooting inventory. $30 for a pound of powder. No casting inventory. Not much for reloading. I buy most of my powder from a distributor who sells retail and $23 was the most I have ever paid. I talked to a vendor who had worked for Cabela's and he told me that last year they got 1 pallet of shotgun shells. where before you had to zig zag between the pallets during the fall. The clothes department doubled in size. Fishing area looked just like Bass Pro. I will go to my LGS for firearms and reloading and Academy for other stuff.

That all sounds about right. Since we never had Cabelas around here I couldnt compare prices but powder at BassPro here is $30-40 /lb which is crazy when i get Vectan online at about $12/lb with free hazmat if I catch a good sale. I only go to BassPro if I have to have something right now otherwise I wait and order online.

I was in the Grand Junction, CO store today. Fewest guns in the gun library I have seen in many a year. Most on the gun rack just outside the Library it seems looked like Mosins.

Looking at a new Winchester '73. $1799. Sportsmans warehouse had them last month at $1389.

I have to second your positive take on the Scarborough Cabela's. Living 300 miles away, I don't visit very often but I always look forward to visiting it when I am able to get down that way. I have sold a number of guns to them and got prices far higher than I could from local gun shops, and I have bought a few as well. Good people to deal with.

I was worried that Cabela's would go down hill when Bass Pro bought them out.
I use to work as guide in NM in the fall of the year and we had the founder and a bunch of top executives from Bass Pro come out on one of the high dollar hunts. At the end they gave the guides hats and t-shirts as tips. These were 14K private ranch hunts Trophy where tips are in the neighborhood of 1K normally. After that there werem't any of those guides looking to buy any Bass Pro Shop gear.

Here in the North Puget Sound area neither the used gun area or the "Bargain Cave" are worth visiting anymore. Sportsman's Wharehouse is much better now. It is almost a relief since I kept running into incredible buys on used guns when I didn't have the money.
