I am going to order one of the LEE .452 300gr Flat nose gas check molds and seem to remember someone on the forum saying that the 2-cavity mold had a larger meplat than the 6-cavity mold. Can someone please confirm this. Thanks

I asked this a while ago as well and couldn't get a confirmation. I have the 2 cavity mold, and meplat diameter is .375" to .380", depending how you measure it. Maybe someone here with a recent 6 cavity mold can measure theirs and chime in.

You may also be interested to know that that mould actually casts about 320 grains in WW alloy and gas checked from my two cavity mould. It's a great boolit!

I can check the boolits my 6 cav throws. Great boolit for .454 cassull. Shot from my 20" puma im gettin around 2100fps, and I recovered one that expanded to
.83" yeah... .83", started at 313gr and ended up 310gr. it penitrated about 3 feet of wet catalog, and 3" of dirt.

Thanks, that would be a big help.

I am also thinking seriously about this bullet. Any ideas how fast you need to push it to stabilize. I'm shooting a .45 Blackhawk and want to shoot a heavy boolit but at moderate velocity...
Thanks,
Dusty

Im gettin .375 also. Bought my mold less than 2yrs ago.

Dusty,

You shuoldnt have any trouble stablizing this boolit. At 850fps, all you would need is about 1:40 twist.

Good information. I just ordered that very mould and it will be here Monday. Sure would like to see the price of those gas checks come down. Won't hold my breath though.

Makes a great light bullet load for a 45-70, paper patched to .460 and loaded to 2150fps.

Got the mould (C452-300-RF) in yesterday and cast a little over 200 bullets last night. Bullets dropped clean and perfect from the mould with one maybe two taps and sometimes none. Only had about a dozen rejects which were operator error. Bullets were ww with a little tin added and water dropped. Never water dropped before and not sure if it was a good idea this time or not. From the mould they were 307 grains at .454 diameter. Sized to .452, lubed and gas checked they weigh just a tad over 314 grains. Meplat with my eyes was .365-370. Was surprized at how hard (resistance) it was pushing those things through the Lee sizer. Now the real work begins in finding a good load they work at.

12.5 grains of HS-6. Gets just shy of 1000 fps in my 4 5/8 " blackhawk and close to 1200 in my Marlin which has a 20" barrel. They are both in 45lc. Found the loads here
=> http://www.customsixguns.com/writings/dissolving_the_myth.htm <=
13 grains was a bit much for the marlin I think because the chamber is a bit generous and the brass bulged a bit. at 12.5 everything is hunky-dory and I can use the same load in both the Marlin and the Ruger.

how do you think these will do in an 1892 Puma w/16" bbl in .45 Colt

they shoot really good out of my 20" 454 puma

I don't have any HS-6 on hand so I'll be working with 296, H110, Lil'Gun and Unique. Think I'll start with the H110 first as it is one of my favorites to work with and see where that takes me. Since it is a H&R Buffalo Classic I should be able to runs some fairly stiff loads as long as accuracy is acceptable.

I cast this bullet in the Lee two cavity mold. I use them in my Ruger Bisley 7 1/2'' bbl. sized at .452. I have run them up as high as 1400 fps with no leading. I water drop wheelweight alloy. It is not a pleasant load for me to shoot.

I use a military surplus powder that is supposed to load like H-110, but is apparently somewhat faster. I also load them down to around 1100 fps using another military surplus powder that is supposed to load similar to HS-7. I do like the bullets I cast but want to experiment with .........Mike

Spector, you're in .454 Casull power range if you're pushing this boolit to 1400 fps., no wonder you find it unpleasant!

Is the surplus powder WC820? That's sold as "same as H-110", but my lot is nearer to AAC#9.

Unless you are using a very . . . VERY old batch of WC820 it is like AA#9, NOT H-110.

The WC820F seems to mimic HS-7 data pretty well where I have used it.

Hi-Tech Ammo ( http://www.iidbs.com/hitech.zkb ) makes this statement on their site.......
"WC820 - (Cross reference loading data H110) New Production". Seems there must be something to the two being alike according to that site. Personally don't know but maybe someone can clear it up. What is the burn rate of WC820?

I got some from Hi-Tech and loaded it to lower H110 specs, in my 454. It gave me sticky cases, it was too hot. Loaded to AA9 specs was OK. SO BE CAREFUL!!!
