I just got my new Wad Punch from Greg in Canada. It is a 12 ga "inside the shot cup wad" of .650 in dia.

This is a nicely made tool which should punch a lot of wads for me to use in slug loads and as over shot cards for shot loads.

Trying it with various types of materials as I speak and seems to work well.

I first tried it in one of my Hand Presses and whereas it did cut heavy business card stock it required a "hit" rather than a "push" thru the medium. IE: it needs to be ran in a bench mounted press for best use.

I made some pieces out of some gasket material and then some clear plastic from a Recoil Pad Package. I used one of them as an overshot card for a buckshot load I made just for this post. You can clearly see the balls in the shell thru the plastic. See Pics.

Looks good and I see him selling some here for sure.

You can contact him at greg@tatvcanada.com>

and his website is https://tatvcanada.com/?product=filler-wad-overshot-card-full-size-wad-punch-bundle-12g

They started at $70, then the guy said $80, now they are $90 or $95 each, plus shipping. Not to rain on anyone parade, but you can buy well over 5000 overshot cards for that price,or almost 3000 cork wads. I'm all for self sufficiency, but when a sharpened pipe can do the same thing, you are mostly buying this for fun at that price. I have made wad punches. I guarantee this tool is more fun, but a sharpened tube, hammer, and wood block is not that bad to cut a couple hundred wads at a time.

Enough being a downer, those clear over shot cards look cool.

Mega: the total price was $83 US. shipped. You're right you can buy alot of wads for that price. My problem was/is I don't always know exactly what I want and as a result the ones that I actually need are always a week and $20+ away. Then I use 10 of them and figure out they aren't what I need at all and I'm right back to the beginning, but with a bag full of stuff I can't use with virtually no resale value at all. How much can you get for 480 16 ga card wads, when 500 cost you $7.50? It will cost that much to ship them to someone else if someone else will even want them and not just go to BPI like I did.

I've got 4 such bags right now and with shipping I'm easily half way to my $83.

This tool allows you to make wads out of just about any material you have laying around. It'll pay for itself.

My problem is both wad availability and need for various ones to try. And the middle-man problem, too: I received 500 20 gauge plastic wads today, only to see that they are 16 gauge. Someone along the way has labeled the bags right but packed the wrong wads.

This keeps happening. I'm gonna order two of these punches.

That is an interesting looking crimp on that shell...

Mark: I didn't address this in the reply to your PM but the 8 little divots around the inside of the crimp are simply what was left after I trimmed 1/4" off the hull.

Here's some more pics of other hulls I crimped with the same tools.

First one is the same length Hull with a Lee Slug and a Blue wad done with a Lyman tool. Note how there aren't any little divots visible. This shell is shorter than the one I did yesterday.

The ones in the second Pic were all done with the BPI tool.

Third pic shows the one on the left done with Lyman tool, right done with BPI tool.

You can see the difference between the two tools.

Now those are the sort of crimps I am used to...

I get them when the fold crimp is not fully trimmed off.

Thanks to Scott (dsh1106) for sharing one of his Lyman 12ga. roll crimping tools with me. As you can see, they roll a very nice crimp.Gp

Yeah, I got my Lyman Tool from him too. He is the Lyman Crimp Tool Guru.

There is very little difference between the Lyman Roll Crimp Tool and the BPI Tool. The BPI tool leaves a flat edge on the end of the crimp and the Lyman makes it more radiused, but the BPI tool also tapers the front end of the hull to facilitate feeding into the chamber of your gun. No big deal with a double gun but will definitely affect a mag fed gun positively.

Also that hull I did above is a new style Win AA hull which is much thicker than most others. Harder to crimp well, but once you are set up for the correct depth they run fine.

So it’s the same “basic” design as the BPI tool except the Lyman has built in rollers ? And thanks by the way !!

Now the $1,000 question is ........ ! Does Lyman still make the tool ? And the $500 question is when they made them did they make them for 10 , 16 and 20 gauge as well ?

Just looked at a circa 1975 Shooters Bible and it says the roll crimper Head could be had in 10 , 12 , 16 and 20 gauge as well as 410 bore For the astronomical suggested retail cost in 1975 of $5.00 each !

FWIW , suggested retail in the 1961 Shooters Bible for the same heads and sizes was the huge cost of $3.50 each !

6pt-sika: You're welcome. Yes, same basic design with 6 rollers instead of 1 or 2. Not a complicated or expensive tool. I see them on Ebay regularly. Gp

Well heck ! From the pics above looks as if the BPI doesn’t do a terrible job . Roll crimping is something I’ve not tried “yet” ! Might have to get a BPI 10 gauge tool and give it a go , if it works well enough I’ll go with a 16 then a 12 and possibly a 20 .

Found one on Ebay that's supposed to be a Lyman but it's hooked up with what appears to be a Lyman hand crank device and the bid starts at $50 . There's also a version coming from the Russian Federation that can be had in 12 , 16 or 20 for about $7.50 each and about $3 for shipping all be it a couple weeks to arrive here and the Rooskie ones do not have rollers . But I was thinking for that price and the fact that I might load 20-40 of each size a year $10 or so a pop isn't that bad !

I saw that Lyman hand crank job too.. but too big for me... want to chuck it up in my drill press... for 50 bucks it’s not a bad deal but just don’t need so much I think on my benches.. most of the time it would sit under my bench... although it would prolly hook right up to the pulley on my old grizzly Band saw?????

6pt-sika. A lot of folks are making various roll crimping tools. Both hand crank and drill motor driven tools are available. I believe it's the Slugs-R-Us people that sell a composite crimping tool that gets good reviews for like eight or nine dollars. I have a couple of the Russian tools, one hand crank and one that screws down like a clamp. Each of these came with an extra head you can use on a bolt shank for drill driven crimps I think these cost about $30. Gp

We got off track I think... sorry...

Anybody try making felt wads with the tool??? Was curious how it handled that wool like material.. I think the sheets of felt that they use to make anti floor scuff things for the bottom of chair legs and such would be nice to try punching... that stuff makes very nice wads...
