4831 , ar-10 ?

Will 4831 powder work in a AR-10(308) ?

4831 is more for 3006 and larger with heavy bullets. not saying it won't work, they'er much better powders more suited for the 308, in an AR platform I'd say no. just my 2 cents worth. your mileage ma varies !!!

I do know that the "similar" M1A is best with mid range burning powders
like Varget/4895/4320/etc for the usual loadings.
I expect they would be the best for good enough port pressure in the AR
with cast boolits

I agree that 4831 is to slow and bulky for the .308.
Yes, it will go Bang.
But there are a lot better powders out there for the .308 in any rifle of that caliber.
If that is the only powder you have, or have a bunch of it, try trading it to someone else for something you can use, that works better in the .308
I use it in my .35 Whelen and 30-06

It's too rough on the gas system for a M1A, don't know about DI guns. There's 40 better powders for the .308[emoji16]

I get best results with Reloader 15, with (160 cast spitzer), in my Armalite 308..............for j-words is AA2520, hands down. Do not download 2520 for cast, your flirting with SEE.

A normal charge for 06 is 50+ grains but the writer was using 42 grains with a 200 grain cast lead bullet. The reduced charge barely generated enough gas to cycle the op rod. So I guess the same thing might work in 308 with a DI gas system.

Use a magnum primer, start around 40gr and work up, that depends on bullet weight, as mentioned above, best with heavy bullets, 180 and above. Works good in my Krag with cast. My 06 needed to go higher with H4831, I was stringing little yellow unburned grains all through the action of my Garand! Had to keep cleaning the chamber to keep going in the 88rd match I shot. A little more of it cleaned up the burn and was still within the pressure limit of my alloy. Lee data for .308 w/180gr shows 40gr producing 1930fps @ 23600psi. His data is extrapolations of jacketed data. Velocity should be a bit higher, pressure lower with cast. At 41gr IMR4831 with a 311284@203gr, the burn is just cleaning up in my Krag and accuracy is pretty good. With its long barrel velocity ought to be over a bit over 2000fps.
