Gauge is based on the same measurement as bore size.
It's based on the number of number of round balls per pound of lead for a particular bore.
8 balls per pound is an 8 bore, or 8 gauge.
6 balls per pound is a 6 bore, or a 6 gauge.

Here's a chart that provides the bore sizes for each gauge (or bore):--->>> http://www.hallowellco.com/bore_size_chart.htm

It's also explained here in Wikipedia. Except that gauge is the new term while bore is the old term.--->>> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gauge_(firearms)

"The gauge of a firearm is a unit of measurement used to express the inner diameter (bore diameter) of the barrel.

Gauge is determined from the weight of a solid sphere of lead that will fit the bore of the firearm and is expressed as the multiplicative inverse of the sphere's weight as a fraction of a pound, e.g., a one-twelfth pound lead ball fits a 12-gauge bore. Thus there are twelve 12-gauge balls per pound, etc...

...Gauge is commonly used today in reference to shotguns, though historically it was also used in large double rifles, which were made in sizes up to 2 bore during their heyday in the 1880s, being originally loaded with black powder cartridges. These very large rifles, sometimes called "elephant guns", were intended for use in India and Africa for hunting game...."

The same bore/gauge chart and dimensions are listed on the Wikipedia page, except they also list some 1/2 gauges (or bores) and the weight of the ball in grains along with the various bore sizes.--->>> see all of the charts (one is a conversion chart including punt guns, another is a UK chart)--->>> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gauge_(firearms)#Gauge_and_shot_type

The United States system is not the exact same as the UK and we have our own system of measurements. especially after 1824:--->>> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_customary_units

"United States customary units are a system of measurements commonly used in the United States. The United States customary system (USCS or USC) developed from English units which were in use in the British Empire before the U.S. became an independent country. However, the United Kingdom's system of measures was overhauled in 1824 to create the imperial system, changing the definitions of some units. Therefore, while many U.S. units are essentially similar to their Imperial counterparts, there are significant differences between the systems."

I know what the bore sizes are, but wanting to know how thick the barrels were, or the outside diameters of some of the 6 and 8 bore rifles. Thanks.
