Here’s this firearms first outing using cast powder coated Lee c309-160-r (166gr actual) with 22.5gr of IMR-3031.
Range was 100 yards.
Muzzle velocity average 1861fps.
The usual group with this 20” barrel using 150gr jacketed stuff at 2018fps is not tighter than 1 1/2” and zeroed at 100 yards. So I’m encouraged!

The older Marlins really are sweet rifles. All of mine are old waffle tops, and none are .30-30s, oddly. My son has one stamped with the Western Auto or Montgomery Wards name which is probably mid '60's vintage. Haven't run cast in it yet and he refuses to scope it, but seems to shoot as well as such a gun can with jacketed handloads. One day, I'll get some of the Ranchdog 165s through that rifle.

Is the barrel microgroove?

What size did you go with? I'm going to try .311" in my 36G when I get time. When I tried .309"s I felt it could do better.

that is a nice decent group especially for the first try. you might also consider Win748 for powder. I've had good success with that powder and a 180 gr Cast

Texas,
I have a 336 and I load mine at .311, and it did tighten the groups quite a bit. 174gr. Lachmiller pan lubes over 20.5 gr. Of IMR 4198. That seems to be the best combo I have found. Oddly enough it also shoots extremely well out of my Rem.788 as you well know. After all you posted pictures if the proof.

I have a 1958 in 35 Rem. My first try with cast was not encouraging. I am going to try again this spring with the snazzy new MP hollow point mold. With jacketed it is absurdly accurate for a lever with a 3X scope. Plan to try powder coating and a harder alloy, perhaps a slower powder than 4198.

Back in 1964 I bought my new Marlin 336C in 30-30 ($53 'on sale'). I started reloading and a year later started casting bullets on a gas kitchen stove. I started with the Lyman 31141 sized to .309(mold was undersized). OK but not great, then I got a 311407 and sized to .311. It was much more accurate, I loaded it over 15gr of IMR4227. It shot around an 1" at 100 yards with a Lyman 66 Peep and 15 year old eyes. Most agree that Microgroove 30-30's do better at .311. The 311407 did bump the throat, I took care to seat so the bullet would just engrave, but not get stuck when extracted without firing. You know how I learned that. All my money came from a paper route, $4.72 a week. My uncle worked at the Bethlehem Steel and gave me bearing babbit flash. I was probably shooting close to pure tin. Absolutely no expansion but accurate.

I love my 50's vintage 336RC. I load Lee's 150 gr flat point, gas checked and sized to .311", over 25 gr of 3031.

With a Skinner peep sight it kills clay pigeons out to 100 yards.

Those are sized .309".
I get about the same group with an 11 1/2" single shot in 300aac @ 1371fps using 2230.
The 30-06 on the other hand is a little larger group but it is at 2436fps. I need to back this one down just a little.
