Leading with hiteck coated commercial bullets

I sometimes buy commercial cast bullets for blasting large volumes when time is short for casting. I have been trying some acme coated bullets lately for light 44 mag and special loads. Loaded to about 850 to 950 FPS ,I tend to get leading in my smith 624s and 629s. These are bevel base commercial 240 grain bullets. Even though bullet fit is far from perfect in these different guns, I am not too impressed with that coating. Anybody else had similar results. I think at that low velocity, leading should be minimal. I am sure I could coat with lla or 45/45/10 and eliminate but that defeats the purpose. Any other experience with hy tech coating and it’s lubricatiting properties?

While I personally have not tried any of the brand of coated bullets you used,, I see a lot of coated bullets used on my range by USPSA competitors. I also use my own cast & PC coated bullets.
I have not seen any issues with leading by any of these.
In fact, I often find spent bullets in my berms where the bullet appears unfired, and no coating stripped off. I tend to agree with the above statement about the fit. Yet, I see coated bullets fired at higher & lower velocities than I'd push them at, witout any effects you mentioned.
Maybe a rough bore is causing it? Have you had a magnified bore scope inspection done?

They are also probably too hard for your light loads.

Fit is King. I have never had any leading with Hi-Tek or powder coat.

I found that chamfering the case mouth and using a Lyman M-die or a homemade expander button helps a lot to prevent scraping PC and lead off the bullet and exposing bare lead to the barrel. Pull a few of your bullets to see if that is your problem.

Fit is King. If it’s scraping anything or getting swaged down you’re losing the fit. NOE sells expanders to go in a Lee universal flare die if you don’t want to go the M die route.

These same type bevel base bullets coated with Alox do not lead or lead very little. I think the coating is less effective. Smith model 624s and 29-2s and 29-3s with .432 throats are what I have. You cannot make .430 commercial coated bullets bigger for proper fit. When home casting with accurate Keith mould sized 432 no problems. Usually low velocity improper fit bullets do ok with lee liquid Alox or 45/45/10. I think the best lubes are still the traditional. The bevel base is also a big contributor to the problem. I hate bevel bases but lower cost commercial bullets all have them.

Are you using the same alloy as the commercial bullets?

The bevel bases don't make any difference, I have used bevel bases and flat based with good results.

I have run Hi-Tek coated commercial bullets up to 1400 fps in .357 mag & .44 mag with out any leading but the bullets were not under size for my guns.
