IMR 4198 powder ---what powder measure to use

I load for a 45-70 and use IMR 4198, running the powder thru a RCBS Uniflow is a pain, like gravel in a meat grinder. Is there a powder measure that is more suited ? I do not want to use dippers. Thanks, Jerry

I use the Lee Perfect powder measure. Works pretty well for most powders including 4198 qnd Rx7 and 4895. I just trickle it up a touch every now and then on some charges.

I have never had it run smoothly in any measure, but it seems to work best for me through a Lyman 55.

I prefer the Lyman 55 for stick powders.

The Quick Measure. It is a bit of a pain, initially, to set up. It's important to keep notes for the different charge tubes adjustments. It consistently delivers +/- .1 with all stick powders. Once done it fast dispensing as anyone could want. I wish I could afford the progressive mount. Maybe with this years the tax return.

Belding & Mull with a homemade vibrator. I burn a lot of 4198 and, once adjusted for the desired volume/weight, I weigh every third charge and only rarely do I see anything outside +/- 1/10 gr. variance.

I also believe, that practice and consistent technique may make considerable difference in the accuracy of any non-electronic powder measure. When I first acquired my B&M, I was almost ecstatic about getting +/- .5 grain and would set it up to drop 1 gr. light and, then, weighing every load, trickle up to the desired weight. After a few hundred rounds, I noticed that my 'drops' becoming more and more consistent and reduced my 'cheat' to 1/2 gr. Then, around three years ago, got the bright idea of using a vibration device, similar to what I'd rigged for my BP drop-tube, and went on from there.

Just like other large extruded powder, I drop from the Uniflow a hair light and trickle up. I don't find it particularly bothersome.

I've had good luck with my Redding BR-30. 3-BR was also good. Didn't like the RCBS uniflow. The Lyman 55 was ok.

The Redding measure just seem to drop more consistently than the others.

Just loaded 200 rounds of 222 with IMR 4198. Charges were set to drop a tenth of a grain light and then trickle up. Probably 5 out of 200 charges weren't right where I wanted when dropped.

Technique, technique, technique. The vast majority of time I can throw most extruded powders within 1/10 of a grain...but that ain't all the time so I do as others, throw light and trickle up.

Ive never found one that worked well or I could trust with any stick powder. Anymore I use a electronic dispenser for any stick powder.

At last count,there are 3 Uniflow's on a carousel in the loading rm. They range in age,but more importantly, they range..... very slightly in their tolerances and clearances. Once I found the one that crunched the least,it gets a small rotor and is used for mostly, IMR4198. It consistantly throws within a kernel or two. Try to throw spot on,maybe a touch light,then add to the scales pan. By trying to throw spot on,it'll show you how that particular hopper likes to be run....

If I cared?.....would machine up a rotor or two. But really, work on consistency.

I`ve went to an electronic dispenser with most powders.
For ball powders I am using RCBS Uniflow.
Sorry, I`m not much help but have used the Uniflow with the small drum to dispense a lot of 4198 in the past.
Get a rhythm and be as consistent as possible from throw to throw...dale

I went electronic also. Fitted the RCBS with a drinking straw and it does very well with 4198. That is my main rifle powder.

I have looked at the electronic dispensers, I do not load enough 4198 to warrant that cost. I load about 100 a year of 4198 with my main powder for 45-70 being Unique. Having only one hand I am trying to make this easy on myself and minimize hand movements, spending a 1/2 a day reloading makes my arm and hand kinda numb at night. I am down to about 1/2 pound or less of IMR 4198, I could switch powders if I found something that would meter easier with about the same results as 4198. Thanks for all the help.
