My son and I went out yesterday for the opening of primitive weapons deer season. The boy did well with my .50 cal Lyman GPR putting a .490” round ball behind the shoulder of a whitetail doe at 50 yards. She ran about another 50 yards and piled up. The pure lead ball actually punched through the opposite shoulder and kept going. Pretty good penetration for a soft lead RB.

Good shooting
She should be tender eating

Never had a problem with a RB taking deer as long as I didn't try and strech the range

I normaly left powder burns on the deers hide
So I never felt my RB rifle was a problem

Good challenges lead to great rewards. And the memories ain't bad either.

This certainly made me remember stepping off to the side to see just how things went.

Junior,
Yup, I get a big kick out of seeing my boy harvest game. I bought that GPR at a gun show in Waco, TX about 8 years ago.

great job. i was just talking to dad about that. After alot of searching i found him some barnes muzzleloading bullets he shoots them in his inline. Ive been using cast 350 lfns in mine. told dad that bottom line is we both forgot how well those little round balls kill. Ive never lost a deer shot by one.

I mulled getting a new barrel and shortening it to ~20". Then Louisiana classified Handi-Rifles as primitive weapons, so my GPH now gathers dust. Still, one of these days. . . .

Actually my barrel is 32" as well. Maybe it just looks shorter in the pic. A little ungainly, but very sweet to shoot.

Well done to both of you!

I shot a nice doe during our early antlerless season a couple weeks ago with my .54 cal. flintlock. About a 90 yd. shot resting the gun on the side of a tree. The roundball went thru both lungs, got about half the ball on the heart and broke the off side shoulder on exit. Can't ask for much better than that.
My barrel is 36" long (my .45 flinter is 42"), so to me, 32" is a short barrel. Many moons ago I used to have a .50 GPR and always liked the balance of it. Good shooter.

Well done, never get over the thrill myself! :drinks: And I've never recovered a roundball yet. Even cast from soft plumbers lead, it always finds a hole on the other side.....8-)
