Fellow Boolit Casters,

THIS BUY IS NOW CLOSED...PLEASE REVIEW YOUR ORDERS FOR ACCURACY AND KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR YOUR INVOICE

This will be one of the last Group Buys for FY19. It has been a pleasure serving you but I need some time to cast myself. But I am going out with a bang. This one I liked so much I didnt want to wait the long duration for getting a mold cut with MP Molds...but this is THE ONE!!!

Mr. Glenn Larsen has come out of design retirement AGAIN to offer the Larsen C432-250 RF. It is spec'ed out for around 250 grains maybe a little over. Pin options is where this will be a must have. Will come with Large, [B]Deep Penta (Same Depth as the Large pin in the Hammer Series) and flat. Penta pins will be rounded to prevent breakage if expansion reaches the base of the HP. The large and deep Penta should get the weight down around 240 when loaded giving good weight for caliber and enough fulle diameter to seal the bore nicely, enter the bore straight and give maximum case fill with slow burning powder. Recipe and properties to replace quite a few molds.

236259

235251 235252

This is a new boolit design (scaled up from the C358-180 applying all of the same priciples that made the original boolit very accurate). This will be suitable for any 44 Special/Magnum (or longer versions) along with the 444 Marlin firearms. It will cast at about 0.432" or 0.434" (your choice) dependent on your alloy. The weight is as shown on the drawing dependent on your alloy of choice. Meplat to crimp will fit long Ruger Cylinders but has as much full diameter beyond the crimp groove as the HG 503.

WE NEED 12 TO COMMIT BEFORE IT MOVES TO ACTIVE AND A FULL 25 HP SIGN UPS BEFORE IT CLOSES!!!

I'm hedging my bets...ALL IN! The collett crimp is the most consistent crimp in my opinion. And is less finicky to brass length or if you get the perfect length and the crimp groove is just in the wrong place youre screwed. Theres no chance of any of that happening here.

Then youll ask why not just go with a slick sided boolit with no crimp groove. I have found that grooveless boolits have a narrower sweet spot when loads are concerned. So if youre trying to shoot plain base, max slow powder powered accurate loads from mixed brass... Larsen figured it out with the 358. That same concept in 44, 45 and 458 should have similar results.

Before i sign you up...PM Mihec about cutting some and leaving the 432640 in his inventory. IMO it is his his most sought after and popular mold. I will ask him as well. Thats the Boolit that started me casting and I hated having to wait for it.

They are not the same boolit. The 432640 is not my most accurate 44 mold but its the most versatile.

My message to Mihec:

Sir,

This is the mold that started me casting. Your mold! It might serve you well to leave this one in your inventory and if you send one to Fortunecookie45LC on youtube...you will never be able to keep one in stock due to the demand. It is by far your most popular 44 mold.

Also, noticed this got moved to closed in delivery. If Miha hasnít committed to run timeline yet wouldnít it make sense to leave open so more could sign up if they want? Donít want to delay it any more but why not add more orders if possible?

As we have all learned...there’s no right answer here. I can guess though. My estimate goes 4-6 weeks. There are only a few in front of it and two of those few are large orders.

I saw some members requesting this on another GB as well, what is the benefit and cost difference to DHL? Or is it just due to regionality?

For 9 euros you basically skip the trouble at customs and have your mold in 3-ish days, plus tracking. I logged into DHL and set it so I get emails at every step, and then have the option to have them leave it at the door w/o a signature.

It's been dead down here for weeks. We could knock a few walls out and get our own mill.

When I first started lurking here there was an effort to launch an Iron mold maker. Brass molds were a rarity then, I still think Iron cast better. NOE MP and Accurate came along to fill that void but we lost the only independent Iron mold maker. Bill Sands made a valiant effort to save Ballisticast as near as I can tell but there was too much wrong. It takes a lot to run a business. You not only have to be good at your trade but every other little thing too. Just rambling to fill dead air. LOL

StuBach

I love Mihaís molds and think he makes works of art that cast great but I have to agree, I love old school iron molds above all others Iíve tried. Would love to see more makers get into making them. I keep meaning to try one of Tomís iron molds but I look at his site with all the options and I get paralyzed by the options cause I already have all the designs I like that I know about, why spend the money?

Iím not sure on this but when I first started buying MP molds it seemed like this was Mihaís side hustle. If memory serves he told me his day job was programming of some sort (web design?). I was under the impression he just has the CNC for doing the mold blocks, hence why he would outsource the parts he doesnít have tooling for. Also, I recall reading that he was picking up some big European contracts for his CNC work so Iím sure that takes priority over these one-offs.

Either way, while Iím annoyed that this got ďclosedĒ prematurely, Iím still thrilled we have a resource like Miha to help us with this hobby. Hopefully we wonít have to wait too much longer (though I did just have to blow most of my slush fund to replace my dead table saw so hopefully it goes before the funding disappears [emoji20])

This GB is Bluejays, so I'm kinda outta line posting on his thread BUT I dont want to see folks getting all knotted up inside, SO:

1) Europe has the same issues we do; Covid. When I spoke with Miha a month ago, all the countries he is buying steel from have put restrictions on who (govt and large businesses) can buy. Depending on the destination country (Slovinia in this case) Germany and Switzerland were refusing to sell unless it was a large order, as in tons at a time. Miha had to rebuild his supply-chain, it took time.

2) He used to be part-time to molds, but went exclusive several years ago, he and his father are the only ones that work consistently because many people in his area are lazy or its easier to suck off their government (remember it used to be behind the Iron Curtain). Getting people to work is difficult or close to impossible.

3) The whole of Europe goes on freakin "holiday" for about a month in the August timeframe. Go back and check posts from previous years August, its the same whining every year. I'm not saying I agree with it, thats just what it is.

4) Those pins that you say are so easy to make- this comment bothers me. Everyone of his mold designs are specific to the pins. Measure some from different molds, height and location of the cross-pins changes, depending on lots of factors. Then you add in that its high-carbon steel (machining is tougher) and the diameter and length are held to .0005". Then multiply that by 25-50 molds with 4 cavities each, and there are usually 3-5 pin choices with each mold. Thats as many as 500 precisely ground, TINY - <language> pins high carbon parts for a single GB. Miha has over 100 designs of mold he has created over the years, and he is trying to keep them all in stock.

5) I've got calls and messages into him like I'm sure many others. Hes not responded to me either. I hope he and his family are safe and everything is ok.

None of you are going to die without receiving this mold at a specific time. I get that quarantine has some people on edge, but for the love of humanity, just ease up. The molds will get made, and this issue will pass.

If you no longer want in on the mold, just respectfully post that you no longer want it. No reason to be a Richard Cranium.:Fire::Fire::Fire:

Peace and out,

Lakehouse2012

I will apologize for this as well. As with everything we have to maintain hope that things will get back to normal or the new normal as soon as possible.

While there was down time Miha did run all the molds that he had pins for and a lot of the older designs are now in stock for the first time in quite a while. He runs molds for 4 different places and the casting community is clamoring for the new ones to be run.

They emailed today to say my address of 20 years was no good. They won't deliver to a PO Box. There is a contact number but Not On Their Site. They will try again tomorrow but their english isn't good and it might be hopeless.

DHL 800 225 5345 They don't really speak english and got my additional information wrong. I looked up the time they were here yesterday and waited for an hour on the side of the road and GOT MY MOLD. I pointed out my mail box to the driver who was a native english speaker along with the fact that the mailbox numbers are not sequential and you have to LOOK.

One star for DHL. They should turn over local delivery to someone who knows the area, They are in San Jose and the closest dropbox alternative is 53 miles away.

THE MOLD IS ON THE HOTPLATE!

The Alpha Hotels turned the power off to prove they could. I had the generator fired and the pot connected in minutes. I was at 300F when I put the power back. Seems to be OK. It's supposed to cool to 160F before you turn it off. (RCBS Pro Melt2)

The bullets Mic .4324"-.4326" from 95.5, 3.5,1 Alloy. Within .0005 across different axis all the way to the ogive. The mold fit is perfect and it ran Great first time out.

Anyway were running the Computer and Satellite on Gasoline. We'll see if homemade electrons are as good as Store Bought.

I had the opportunity to cast a few today. After a short bit of warm up I began getting good bullets. The OD of the bullets is .433", about what I expected. The gas check shank however measures between .417" to .419". The gas checks I have won't even come close to fitting. I have another gas checked mold from Accurate and the shank measures .400". It's about a perfect fit. What is everyone going to use for gas checks with these bullets? Any suggestions appreciated.
Take care,

I would love to size with the gas check in one step as I don't coat. The gas checks won't come close to going on the shank. The shank is about .017" too big.

These do turn out nice, cast up some pentas and some solids and am very pleased. With my 4/4/92 blend the pentas came in right at 242gr and the solids at 251gr.

These will do some damage.

Gas checks were made by me on a FreeChex III out of .014 inch aluminum I got off Amazon. The checks fit very snuggly and weíre almost impossible to install once both were powder coated. I may need to drop to a slightly thinner material or check before pc

What has everyone's fix been for this? I have Hornady 44cal gas checks and they fit on my MP434-640 mold great. Can't even get them to start on this one. Any suggestions?

Run them through the sizer as just the boolit and check. Powdercoat afterwards. A tight fit still seats square. I have the 434 mold and this is what is working with mine. There are so many different kinds of gas checks out there. Its hard to accomodate all of them. Are you using the undersized shank GCs? Most of the time the shank is too small and having standard shank GCs and "normal" shank GCs have helped me out. I only have one mold that needs the undersized. The balance I can make work by coating afterwards.

It doesn't matter when I try to put the gas check on the shank is roughly .015 larger then it should be. My MP434-640 has a .404 shank this mold has a .419 ish shank. I'm using standard Hornady gas check and from everything that I've found they are the same size as all standard gas check. I'm kinda in the same boat as Rick, that this mold as is ain't going to work the way it is. Has anyone been able to get in contact with Mihec about this issue. I can say that if Miha is going to run another set I would pay him for the corrected blocks but if not Iíll deal with tight gas checks before going without the mold. These were a bear to install but they ended going on nice and tight which probably isnít a bad thing.

Iíve also found that 44mag rounds PCd are fine without a gas check. Weíve done pretty extensive testing with the 429-244 gas check mold both checked with PC and non-checked Pc and found you get similar velocities and accuracy. Not saying Iíve stopped checking them as a normal practice, but maybe try a few PCd without gas check before opting to send the whole mold back for a refund. Also, other forum members may be interested in buying/trading.

I expect Miha will make it right as heís a good man to work with and has done similar in the past.

Would anyone else be happier to have a replacement block set instead?

bluejay75

It will be the same as last time we did a mold block exchange on a mold I ran. You will send the blocks or mold to me. I will issue the refund or you will get a new set of mold blocks if you chose to get replacements.

This gets the affected blocks out of circulation. There have been times when the defective blocks have been resold and the issue is being raised with Miha from the second or third buyer. To keep those communications down and the trickle in of the affected blocks it is best to get them out of the circulation.

When you send the blocks, if you happen to have a few casted boolits to put in the box. The measurements will help get the GC shank correct.

I will keep you posted. I have a message out to him and will follow up with a phone call in a few hours when he opens.

Just heard back from Miha. Heres where we are. Of the 100+ molds of this same design that he cut to include the prototypes he used for testing, no one has said that these GC shanks are too large or too small except the three who have replied here to this forum. This may very well be a GC issue rather than a mold issue. I have different models of GCs that I will send you samples of if you want to try them (my input). And ALL GC versions of this mold has been sold out for weeks.

He is willing to provide GC expanders to the three of you that feel your GC shanks are too large for the GCs you have. Option 1.

Return for refund. Option 2.

Cut new blocks. Option 3. But only after all reasonable attempts have been made to remedy and problem has been assessed.

He requested that you post pics with calipers showing the reading at the base and nearest the bottom driving band. He needs that to do a couple things...see if it is a mold defect (Diameter) to correct, mold defect (too rounded or bulged on the GC shank end). You can send those photos directly to him but Im certain most of us casters would like to see them too to compare to ours.

What are your thoughts?

Rickin TN. Yours might be undersized as well. I spoke to leadhopper this morning and the Hornadys he has mic like a Gator Undersized GC. My older Hornady GCs mic 10-12 thou under the Gators and almost the same as a Undersized GC. Please mic your Gas Checks and see what you come up with.

Commercial GCs are built for commercial molds. There's a little you have to give up to get larger diameter boolits to be able to size at a larger diameter. Most Lyman, Hornady etc are built to service off the shelf molds primarily and come out of the mold at .430 max. Have to be able to seat a check on those boolits with little or no lead displacement. So they have to be smaller.

bluejay75
02-23-2021, 11:07 AM
Measurement midway of the check is .416 and is .418 at the mouth.

278357

Now these are too big for my 434 640 and when sized to .433 they spin freely in my hand and will not come off. But when I powdercoat everything works out the way its supposed to. Otherwise I have to use undersized GCs to get a first time seat on a non powdercoated boolit.

Well after watching this thread I finally got a day warm enough to give the new mold a try.

I have a brass 2 cav 434 and 434 is laser etched on the mold block. After cleaning the mold with soap, water, and a tooth brush I installed the solid pins and gave it three heat cool cycles on the hot plate.

The pot was totally empty so I went to the pile of ingots of just as smelted clip on wheel weights, no other alloy added. My dimensions are all with straight clip on wheel weight alloy.

With a hot mold and pot at temperature the first bullet was filled out crisply with no wrinkles, spruce cut easily and the bullets fell out the mold the moment I opened the handles. Beautiful bullets and superb design from Glenn.

Here is where I start to cry. The gas check shank is .4185-.419 Same as LEADHOPPER's mold All my other 44 cal molds (Lyman and LBT) measure .404-.405 with a visible cut in the shank where the gas check goes on and the checks snap on nicely. With the big square shoulder on this mold I don't think a gas check expander is going to work for this one.

The bullet diameter is .4355-.436 which is getting pretty big.

I would like to hear what some of the other guys with the .432 and .434 molds are coming up with for cast dimensions and what alloy they used.

My guess is that since he is from Finland and they appear to be aluminum he is making his own. I'm not sure how St Bach might have gotten checks on his. I have some Gators and Hornadys here, can't find the old Lymans that I have. I took a few of both and put them on a aluminum plate and heated them until they got soft. Then I took the round end of a small ball peen hammer and pressed it in to open them up. No way are they going to fit on mine. Whats got me bamboozled is out of the group buy only about three if us are encountering problems.

I will admit, my checks are made on a FreeChexIII out of aluminum and they were pretty tough to get on. I checked all the ones Iíve cast with this mold prior to noticing the issues everyone was having otherwise I would have done a little more testing between my hornaday check and the different thicknesses I have. This is not an offer of sale by any means but if someone wanted to do some testing I could sell/trade them some of the checks I made if they want? I donít shoot 44 a lot but got in the groove and made some extra checks a couple weekends ago so I could spare some of what I have. Send me a PM if interested.

For those of us making our own, another thought I had was sourcing some slightly thinner material to cut them out of to make these easier. I use .014Ē thick sheeting currently based on Pat Marlin recommendations so I was wondering if there is a source for 0.012Ē or even 0.010Ē available to try? I know some say you can make out of soda cans but those come out too thin in my opinion and donít stay on great (though didnít test that against these bullets either).

Note: I am happy with my mold and not trying to complain about the shank as I didnít have too much of an issue. Just trying to assist those that are having issues.

StuBach
04-17-2021, 04:52 PM
I finally had a chance to get some more cast up and my gas check shank came in at .418Ē with 94/3/3 alloy. I have the .432 4cav HP version.

I ran a little test with the three types of checks I had on hand: Hornaday (roughly 2014 purchase), vintage Ideal (1950s era), and my own Freechex III checks made with .014Ē aluminum.

Freechex were by far the easiest to apply though they were still a bit tough. Vintage ideals werenít bad but did shave a little lead when being applied. The Hornaday were by far the hardest to apply. They actually cut into the lead that had lead coating the outside rim.

All were able to be applied but I did have to use some case lube in the die to get them to run through as this bullet is slightly oversized with my alloy and my Star .429 sized struggled a little. Actually had two of the test bullets with Hornaday checks get stuck to where I had to drill them out, but no issues once I used the case lube. If using normal lube in sized or tumble lube on bullets I suspect you wouldnít have an issue.

Here is photo of Hornaday check with lead cutting on outside of the check (right side in photo). Please not lead cutting makes check look like itís uneven but it is on square.

Moral of the story, use checks other than Hornaday and youíll likely be ok. Do I wish shank was slightly smaller to fit checks easier, yes, but do I feel itís outside of acceptable tolerances to where I need a replacement, no. I have other 44 molds that have tight shanks too so this isnít outside of normal I donít think.
