There are lots of folks who sell un-treated corn cob media. What are the screen or grit numbers that one need when buying in bulk?? The stuff from the suppliers is spendy and then there is shipping on top of it. I haven't seen the guy at the gunshow in a few years.

I had purchased two 5 gal. buckets at a gu show years ago on top of what I already had, but now it is gone. I remember looking at one time and seeing 10-14 or 14-10 as the proper screen size, but there were no numbers on my pails. It is not on the store bought stuff either.

I know that some sizes are to big and will get stuck in rifle cases. The stuff from pet stores may be to big. Any help and sources will be appreciated.

Thanks.

I can't help on grit #'s but I buy crushed walnut in 50lb bags at a sandblasting supply, they carry 3 grits, I use the medium, it is small enough to get stuck in the flash holes. if that helps?

Corncob blasting media sizes:

--------- passes -------stops
8/14 #8 (.0937”) #14 (.0555”)
14/20 #14 (.0555”) #20 (.0331”)
20/40 #20 (.0331”) #40 (.0165”)
40/60 #40 (.0165”) #60 (.0098”)

I believe what I have is 14/20 and is small enough pass through the primer hole but sometimes with bridge with another grain or two but is easy to remove unlike the larger sized.

Walnut, not cob, but it'll give you an idea of the screen sizes. I'd go with the 14/20 cob.

Check out Kramer Industries--I got 50# of 14/20 untreated corn cob grit earlier this year for $105/shipped. Shipping was about as much as the grit cost, IIRC. Still pretty reasonable, I thought. It came in a 2' x 2' x 2' box. The 14/20 pours freely from 22 caliber necks.

My bag of cob was sold as a blasting media for cleaning log homes. It's about as fine as beach sand. I love it! Very rarely clogs flash holes, cleans/polishes great and is very easy to get out of the cases.

Moral - Get the finest grit media you can find.
