I've been searching for a good pot for melting and a good buddy of mine in the air conditioning business has a back yard full of empty freon bottles. Wouldn't one of these cut down make a good melting pot? It would have a round bottom for easy scooping of lead and it is made of thick steel which should hold up to high heat very well, even better than cast iron. I'm thinking about having some "wings" welded on the tank so that it will have a very sturdy seat on my fish cooking burner. Have any of you seen one of these in use for melting lead?
Any reason why I should not use this kind of tank?

works fine till it stresses and your shoes are full of lead.

Get a cheap cast iron dutch oven. They will hold about 50 lb of lead and can be heated on a turkey cooker or with a tiger torch. Remember to clean and wax cast iron pots when you are done.

I couldn't find a decent pot here locally so I just cut a propane tank in half. Ain't pretty but so far it's working pretty good.

Cheers,
Richard

You can usually find a old cast iron pot in a thrift store or yard sale for cheap!

If there are no seams near or on the bottom, I don't see why not. The 30 lb. R-12 containers that I've seen should work. Seems like a lot of work though, I'd try the thrift store route for a cast iron pot.
