IMR 4198? Got a canister now looking for a place to use it.

Very open ended but I got 8 lbs of IMR 4198 (latest short cut version) and have only used it with .222 jacketed and 38-55 (weak Stevens 44 single shot action). Works good in those but wondering if there are any other success stories with this powder. Mostly interested in "favorite" cast loads (won't ignore jacketed loads). Not necessarily looking for specific load data but specific mold or bullet that I might work with would be good info.

I have molds/guns/dies for .222, .223 (Contender/AR), .243 Win, 6.5x55, 270 win., 7mm TCU, 7mm-08, 30 Carbine, 30 Herrett, 30/30, 30 Remington, 30-40 Krag, 30-06 (my favorite), .303 British, 7.62x54R, 8mmx57, 35 Remington, .357 Herrett, 38-55, 45-70 (trapdoor and a bolt gun). Maybe a few I'm not recalling. Love to hear if you have a favorite for one of these I should try.

30 grains in .303 British, 7.62x54R, .30-'06 with #311299, #314299, etc.

Winchester '92 .44-40 compressed case full (about 23 grains) with Hornady 200 XTP.

My favorite powder in the 45-70 by far. Both cast and jacketed. I use several different powders in the 45-70, but this one is by far my favorite.

I use it in a few calibers.

It gets run pretty hot in a cpl bolt 223's. Slow twists with a "massaged" Lee 225-55rf. Also use it in 7-08 as a mid level load behind a Lee 285-130R.

24 grains in the 7.62x54R with the 185 grain Lee. Might be good in the Krag or 303 Brit also.
20 grains in 223 with 50 grain jacketed.

IMR4198 is my go to powder in my 218 Bee using the NOE gas checked 45 grain wide flat nose boolit.

I've shot up at least 40 pounds of it the past 20 years or so mostly in 45-70, 500-450 and 577 BPE rifles. It's my go to powder in large straight wall cases meant for black powder. I use the Ross Seyfried formula of 40% of the black powder charge. It does require a filler in the biggest cases, I use dacron again per Seyfried. Lately I've had better luck with Trail Boss in the 577-450 and 577 snider cases so will be trying it some of the others mentioned.

I need some to try in my 38-55 whenever I find some.

I've loaded IMR4198 in several different .38-55's with great success using both plain base and GC 255 grain boolits. Depending on the strength of the action on your .38-55 you can load from about 17.0 / 18.0 grains up to about 28 / 30 grains with the 255 grainers. I've shot the lighter loads in an original Ballard Pacific, medium loads in an early 1900's vintage '94 SRC, and the heavier loads in a re-barreled large action Martini and had very good accuracy in all of them.

I've compiled a lot of load data for the 45-70, and I settled on 4198 to experiment with, because on the low size trapdoor loads are like... ~30 ish grains. But you can work all the way up to ~40 + grains for stouter stuff. It's really versatile in that regard.

I used it for 223 in an ARish setup under 55 fmj. Got several pounds in a large box of reloading stuff at a yard sale...all were still sealed.
The only thing that I really remember is that the charge weight was deceptively low compared to my regular TAC, CFE223, and Varget.

The 38-55 I have has a notoriously weak action. It's a Stevens model 52 (44 action). IMR 4198 has been a real good powder keeping the pressure down just to the point of stopping sooting of the cases. I don't shoot that one much and 8lbs would last me a few lifetimes.

Nice to see some suggestions on the other calibers. Have a lot of choices in 7.62x54r.

Any chance of a light load with heavy cast bullet for the Garand? Guessing a bit too fast for that one. Also have an SVT-40 that I might try it in with some heavy cast.

Seems to be a favorite in the 45-70. I have a Danish Krag in 45-70, might have to give it a try in that one and the Lyman 457124.

Most accurate powder in my 223 contender under 55 gr Sierra's , 24.5 gr. under 150 Sierra in my 30 Herrett , 7TCU with 160 Lyman and 130 Lee

I use it in my .222, .223, .300Blackout, .30 carbine and my .7 TCU all the time. It is also good in some of the larger .30s in somewhat reduced loads. It is to say the least, a very versital powder.

I like it in 444 and 310 gr lee bullet can't remember the exact load will have to look it up.also 20 gr in my 7.62x39 with lee 155 gr bullet.

23-25 grs plus 1 gr dacron and the Lee 175 cast in 8mm, I've shot 24 gr load for years about 1750 fps, but am just about out of IMR4198 and probably won't replace it, just too many choices nowadays.

Both the H and IMR 4198 are my favorite in 45-70. Works good reduced and works good for full power loads. Also plays well in the 30-30 with cast, good power, consistant and a pound goes a long way.

For 223, I routinely use 21.0 gr. of imr 4198 for 55 grain fmjs. for the kids to shoot. I use it in 45-70 also, but do not remember the number of grains. I use it with the Ranch dog mold,..I think it's a 350 or 360 grain bullets, I have not tried it in 444 yet. But intend to if I can find some data for it. I do not shoot the 444 much.

My favorite load with IMR 4198 is for my 30-30. The 174 gr. Lachmiller checked, pc'd, and sized to .311 over 20.5 gr. IMR 4198 . It is a deer slaying load. I also shoot alot out of my Rem .222 788 bolt gun. Jackets as well as cast with great results. - Caster
