I can not afford to get several powders so wish to get one which can be made to work for most rifle loads, low end practice not max loads. I can get the best price on AA#5 or AA2460. Anyone have any experience with these? Also could AA1680 but it is a little more money.

AA #5 is a fast pistol powder most suited to the likes of 9mm. 2460 is a mid-burn rate rifle powder and thus the more logical choice for what you ask. AA 1680 is borderline between very slow for pistol and very fast for rifle and a niche powder at best. If I were gonna buy one rifle powder (without knowing which rounds) I'd say get 4895.

I settled on #5 about 8 yrs ago for all, repeat all, my handguns. The calibers run from .32 a.c.p., 9mm, .38/.357, 40 s&w, .45 a.c.p., .44 spcl/.44 mag., 45 LC. I had to start buying in 8 lb. jugs to keep up. Quite clean, easy to measure and reliable.:Fire:

AA#5 is very close to HS-6 in burn rate, just a tad slower.

AA2460 is in between Varget and BL-C2 but needs the fires of hell to cook it in less than full pressure loads.

Both have excellent uses, just not for what you have in mind. The AA5 would work, but I wouldn't trust it without a filler. The AA2460 is good, but for wide open use.
