Went to a show out of town yesterday, thankfully I didn't have to do the driving, and while walkin' the aisles I came across a Winchester 1892, full octagon 24" bbl., supposedly chambered in 32-20.
Now, I got a thing for the 32-20 so naturally I had to look it over. It had been refinished at sometime in the past, early mfg. circa 1902 based on the serial #, but no where did I find a stamping with the chambering. It had what appeared to be the original barrel but there were no markings on any of the flats. It didn't appear as though the barrel had a file taken to it, removing the markings. Or if it was done, it was done really good. So, my question is where else might I find a stamping? On the underside under the forend? That would be a first, for me at least.

If you have any questions about a 1892 contact Michael Puzo at 2bitrifles@gmail.com. This guy is writing a book and has documented over 10,000 1892’s, including mine. He will be able to answer your questions as he has access to records.

Well, I've had a chance to look at another 1892 and have concluded that all markings were removed when it was refinished.

I'm guessing a rebarrel job due to a lot of missing lettering on the barrel. I'm not even close to being an authority on old Winchesters, but seems to me there should be patent dates, proof marks, .32 WCF, and Winchester on there.

I have seen a lot of refinished Winchesters with the markings removed. when I see them I lay them back down and walk away.
