9mm Herters Ammo

Did a little shooting Saturday. Me and Bro had three 9mm pistols. He had just picked up a nice S&W m39 and wanted to try it out. We don't load 9mm but have standard ammo for each gun.
We had a mixture of factory ammo and I had a box of Herters 9mm that came on a trade with a
P-38. Anyway we were shooting the 39, a Browning HP and a Kimber Solo. We had Win, Rem, Fed and Browning besides the Herters. We never buy Herters so we decided to shoot that box up to
see what the 39 would do. We had duds, ones that went of on second try, jams on every other one
and each one sounded different. Some were so weak you could see them bounce when they hit the
plates. Also they were dirtiest ammo I have ever shot in anything. They preformed same in all 3 pistols. A side note is the Browning ammo although it shot fine did not function well in the Solo.

I may regret posing this comment (my ignorance may be revealed): however, I was under the impression that Herters went out of business long ago. I still have a 1970 Herters catalog.

Since I'm under this assumption, I'd think that ammo must be quite old.

I may be wrong.....I often am.

That stuff is horrible rubbish! I was given a gift card to Cabela’s a few years ago and bought some of the Herters branded 9mm - mistake! It wouldn’t consistently fire in a Kimber Solo, Kahr pm9, Browning Highpower, CZ 75 or a Glock 19. Like the OP reported, “…duds, ones that went off on second try, jams on every other one and each one sounded different.” my exact experience. I still have a handful around - they're great for immediate action drills 🙄

I’ve ran a few boxes of their FMJ 357 mag thru my Blackhawk and found it to be very accurate and reliable. For $25 a box I was impressed! I guess I got lucky or your unlucky!

I have found Herters labeled brass laying around and it seems to work like other brass. It has looked like it ran fine, no duds or evidence of multiple strikes.

Glad I read this. Their 16ga ammo is better than decent, and frequently on sale. Have had good experience with 5 flats of 16ga. I had been considering trying the 9mm and 40, thanks for posting your experience.

Herters labeled brass is one of the head stamps that I cull to the scrap bucket when I sort range brass. I don't like the way is reloads compared to U.S. brands of brass.

I think the only steel case Herters I've shot was through an old Mosin, and I don't remember any problems with it.

I've shot plenty of the brass cased blue box herters through various 9mm firearms, as well as some 45 acp, 40, and 357 mag. None of it was exceptionally dirty or inaccurate. In fact, for cheap shoot-em-ups it was actually pretty good. Just my two cents.

I have seen several flavors of Herter's 9 mm ammo. The steel case comes from Russia, the brass case comes from Czechoslovakia, and the aluminum case from CCI Speer.

I have a bunch of Herters 30 carbine, I'm thinkinf Tula steel case. Anyway, at the range shooting 50yd 1.5" groups. My reloads show the same accuracy. I also have Herters steelcased 62 gr. hollow points but have never grouped.
