View Full Version : Here is my best 223 target

Could be a fluke because I do not believe I am this good but it’s on paper and witnesses at the range were salivating all over this during cease fire target recovery time. It is my personal best.
Just thought I would share

That is a great showing, Paul. Happiness is something you did that was impossible, right? Fluke or not, it makes no difference. Do that several more times, and in various ambient conditions, you might consider acquiring a BR gun meant for the purpose and play that game for real. ... felix

You BR guys are really good, do not know if I can ever step into that game.

what kind of cast boolits are you shooting( this is the cast boolit forum)......

Good shooting, and obviously a good rifle. You might have a good cast boolit platform there, the older Remington rifles in 223 were put up with slower twists and can be very lead-friendly. Of course, cast boolits in smaller calibers than 30 can be a path to madness, but yer already here--so no loss.

Outstanding!

I'm gonna be trying to do that in a few weeks.

Well, we are primarily a cast boolit site--but we admin pogues here are kinda lazy, and indulgent, and not highly-motivated to rend and rip when a shooting-related subject has a bit of freq drift. If bribed with microbrews or casting metal, we can become downright accomodating. :)

Sorry guys was excited and since I cast pistol I frequent this site to get information and was not thinking about this being cast only.

We're not for cast only just with the calibers that shoot cast good... THe .223 has been a different animal. All shooting is fine by me.

Mike, some of us need encouragement, and, in fact, all of us do down deep. You are the best brass wheeler and dealer around, and perhaps the most honest. How about that!!!! ... felix

felix
10-08-2008, 09:59 PM
Paul, your next challenge is to repeat that 17 caliber target, but with a naked lead boolit, any velocity, or with a gaschecked boolit at 1800 plus. Mike would enjoy that, and so would I. ... felix

Big Black as far as I am concerned you post about anything you want. Just so it involves shooting. Some times there is not a forum to post what I would like to post so I pick the one that is close. Keep up the good shooting. I have one I would like to post that I shot with my AR. 8 rounds -Less than 1/2 inch at 100 yds

Dang good shooting.

What sort of scope do you have on your rifle? What did the group measure? If the load is consitant push it back to 200, 300, 400. If you scope is 1/4" at 100 yards zero it there, 4 clicks up will put you very close to dead center at 200, 12 clicks from 100 zero will get you right there are 300, 24 up from 0 will get you in at 400, 36 up from 0 will get you close at 500. Fine tune as need. We shoot 223's out to 500 plus alot with 55gr bullets dont let anyone tell you it cant be done, they do drift in the wind though.

Our go to load for 223 is 25gr of h335 with 50-55gr bullets. Nosler Ballistic tips are about the best thing in our AR-15's and single shot Savage.

Right now a cheap BSA, I hope to be able to afford some nice upgrades for this rifle one day.

Dittoes to the Nosler 55 grain BalTip--they shoot VERY well in my Ruger bolter, too. I use 25.0 grains of WW-748, pretty close to the H-335 fuel Doug suggests. Not a max load, but does it ever shoot.

Mike in CO--I resemble that remark! :)

I have yet to see anyone who could actually hit a coin. They get close and shoot impressive groups in the attempt - but no hits.

Now I've gotta try and hit a coin. What's the minimum respectable required Distance?

I have a nickel I shot at 65yds with a Marlin 925, Simmons 3 X 9 Blazer Scope, and Federal Bulk HP ammo. Took two tries to hit it using the mirror on the side of my Blazer for a rest. It's the most accurate 22lr I have ever owned.
Got it at a flea market for $85 W/no scope. A friend that knew I was looking for a good .22 called me and told me he had seen it.

Does this count?

Left to right:
Dime: 3 shots 50 yards 22lr Magtech Bolt action rifle 3-9x
Quarter: 5 shots 15 yards 22lr Ruger MK11
Penny: 2 shots 50 yards Savage 17hmr 8-32x
Penny: 5 shots 50 yards Savage 17hmr 8-32x
Dime: 3 shots 25 yards 22lr Magtech Bolt action rifle 3-9x offhand
Nickle: 1 shot 25 yards offhand 22 Magtech Bolt action rifle open sights.

Whats the next challenge?
Tights group at 500 yards?

Doug,

What do you need a target that big for if you're going to shoot such a small group?!? Sheesh! Seems like a waste of paper to me! Why don't you shoot a 3" .357 at it instead?

Seriously though, that's some pretty impressive shooting!

Nice Mini. Mines a 1in9.

Mine does shoot incredibly well, with the load work I've done so far. I know it can do better and specially with a trigger job badly needed as it creeps from here to Ney York..

Is that a barrel stabilizer? Is that one from the guy over at Perfect Union?

Thanks: Come to think of it mine may be 1:9 as well.
Yes the Strut is a copy of Kkinas over at Perfect Union, I made it before his was available for Purchase, Awsome concept, works as advertized :-D
I have a #3 trigger Job, smaller gas bushing, Brake, and Glass Bedded.

Did Kkinas finally get it on the market? I hadn't been there in a long time.

WHo did you trigger and glass bed?

52gr. bullet with 25 gr. of H335 shots well in all of my .223s.
Trying to get Lyman 225415 to shoot well out of my Savage 24, need a good squirrel load.

BB, that is a great group and I think you will see many more of them with your combination of components, equipment and technique.

I use 24.5 grains of H335 with the Hornady 55 GR FMJBT as my standard load in my AR's. I chronographed some the other day and was getting an average of 2977 fps from my 20" A2.
Yours should be breaking 3000 consistently. I have put a match aperture and match post on mine and, on a good day, can get 2" groups at 100 yds. off the bench with my 54 year old eyes which are not nearly as sharp as they used to be. I have tried that Sierra 52 gr. with the above load, but found very little improvement. I think my eyesight is the biggest limiting factor, so will just have to get along with it unless I decide I need some work done. Don't really like the idea of having my eyes tinkered with.

I have a flattop carbine that I am going to put a decent glass on in the near future to see what I can come up with for much better groups. I'm looking for some good results; I doubt they will ever be as sweet as what you have there but it gives me a goal to aim for. jw

Nickels at 15 feet will humble many a handgunner. Off hand with a K-38 and young eyes it was fun. Nowadays I can enjoy the memories.
