I will be hunting moose up to 300 yards but mostly under 200
I will put a small hollow point to the bullet above
it weigh 550 gr. cast out of w.w.
the rifle is a Sako 85 brown bear in 450 rigby
able to reach velocity of 2250 fps

I would think that would do nicely, although it will be considerable slower at 300yd. good luck

I'd say whatever velocity gives you the best accuracy.

My friend has a 450 Rigby in a Mauser action, I once asked about 300 m accuracy and he said he can't shoot it from the bench enough to find out. And he is shooting for living, being a professional trainer/instructor. We have shot 300 m together for a couple of decades, mostly 300WM. I had 338 Lapua for a while but it broke stocks and scopes.

yes this his the reason I practice all summer on paper target at different yardage up to 300
the scope has a dot surrounded by a circle and cross hair
and I have the Swarovski ballistic substention apps
but for the long shot I rely mostly on clicking up the elevation turret

2250 fps if it holds accuracy to 300 yards.

had a 460 weatherby DGR and with a position sitting up on the bench and just having a front rest and resting your elbows on the table its ruff but easy to print groups of about 6 inches

2250 fps if it holds accuracy to 300 yards.

my previous 458 with a saeco 545 gr cast bullet at 2130 fps easily shoots to 300 with good group
we are a party of 4 for moose hunting and the rest all have ruger no 1 in 458 and these rifle account for many moose up to 300 but mostly under 200 yards

this summer I will give pics and accounts of shooting this rifle
powder charge ETC and bullet performance (expansion) in wet paper

I would not put a hollow point on that bullet. It will do the job as-is.

2 years ago one partner on the hunting group shot a big buck with that bullet in is ruger no 1 no hollow point
the fps was 1650

the moose was walking away at a angle and the bullet entered just in front of the rear ham and existed just rear of the opposite front leg
according to him it just drop on the spot

At distances you are taking about, I would definitely want all the velocity that I could get with acceptable accuracy....

these 2000 + fps load will be used for hunting only

because on the bench its to much

plinking between 1100 with trail boss and up with 5744 but after each range session always a couple round of hunting loads to keep in shape for the hunt

This is very interesting, I have shot 300 m for a long time but I seldom see big bores at the range.

I have a 470 NE project happening here but not full house, neither long range. And Rigby is a LOTT more.

quigley black powder math are up to 1000 yards and they have great accuracy
458 winchester 458 lot and all the .458 caliber rifle are just modern sharp
on my Steyr 450 marlin I had a night force scope with 30 minutes of graduations on the reticle so at 1550 fps I could reach 400 yards by holding on different marks......on top of that I had a 20 moa picatiny rail

I will be following this.

Might even try a 45-70 Marlin @ 300, I've never had an appropriate scope on one but now this SBL model has a rail so I can easily borrow a long range mildot scope from other rifles. I've been happy with the Marlin factory ghost ring.

Considering I shoot beer cans with a 22 LR up to 200 meters... I don't know why I never grouped 458's further than the usual 100.

Best thing for breaking stocks is a leadsled.

yes you are correct on this......specially with hard recoiling rifle
