Not cast, but a home built arrow did the trick on this fellow this morning!

Good Deal Jcren Nice buck. Everyone is waiting with baited breath to hear the rest of the story. I get to go down along the Rio Grande to hunt in South Texas December 26th through the 30th. Archery only. The Old in my name OldBearHair means over 84 years old. LOL Yeah 56 lbs Hoyt Avenger 2004 model. 208 grain two blade home made broadheads 1.75 inches wide. Much penetration.

Wow! It would have still been Wow if your huge buck had been taken with a 300 Mag at 225 yards. But a homemade arrow deserves a WOW, WOW. Like the others said, we need to hear the story.

Sorry, was so excited to post a pic I forgot the story part! Been seeing another good buck on camera for weeks on a plot and feeder that is about 100 yards from my house, but he never came out to my blind in daylight. So I moved back into a strip of timber behind the plot to see if I could catch him traveling. About 9 am I heard leaves crunching and through the brush to my left I saw bits of that chocolate rack bobbing around. He was skitish and eased toward the plot at an angle about 20 yards off, but I haven't hunted that stand in 4 or 5 years and every time he paused, I had brush and limbs in the way! I drew twice, but was afraid of a deflection so I waited. When he went out to the plot I thought I had missed my chance as I had no clear shot through the wood line and he had several ways to go from there that I couldn't cover but after 20 minutes or so he headed out up a trail that took him 25 yards to my right with one good shooting lane. Shot was a bit high left, ( he was walking slowly and I was fighting the shakes from the adrenaline rush) but the slicktrick magnum 4 blade did the job, ran 50 or 60 yards and crashed and never got up.
I suppose I should consider my audience when I refer to home built arrows, by y'alls standards they are just home assembled!
I got a bunch of small diameter tapered target shafts from a Oklahoma shaft manufacturer that I have been fighting to get to fly right with turned down thread inserts for years. Fianally hit the right combination with a turned down 25grain easton insert with a 50 grain brass bob weight, custom wraps and a fletching pattern I developed with a target archer years ago. 500 grain, high foc shaft and slicktrick magnum head. Same setup i used on this smaller buck early in the season.

Another angle on the big boy. Btw, for reference that first pic, I am 6' 3" and 250. I have deer hunted since I was 12 and this is the biggest deer I have ever seen on the hoof! Was in a hurry to get him to the processor (kinda warm for this time of year here) and didnt think to take measurements, but am doing a euro mount, so update to come.

Yes sir! Yes sir! Had to lay down my recurve after 48 yrs of hunting the hard way. Arthritic wrist just won't let me. Had to chuckle at another thread about what made you make the jump to cast boolits....after all the years with a stickbow my 100 yd in range with home rolled shotgun slugs and buckshot seems like grocery shopping! Shot one with my old .270 last year at 265 yds and that seemed like ordering one on Amazon. Haven't pulled the trigger on it since. Great job jcren, nothing like getting close! Merry Christmas.

Good morning from another stick and string feller Congratulations !
Very nice looking corn cruncher you received in range. Sure does the heart good to get to chow down on what patience and persistence will provide.

Got him back! Guy that did the mount measured him at 150 inches and a full 27 inch inside spread! That is the arrow that got him, 30" shaft.

Very nice jcren. Now hang that guy in a prominent place so you can see it and relive the hunt every time you see it.
