I wonder if anybody has tried cast bullets in lever action chambered for the 500 S&W?
Thank you
Filippo

Not a lever action, but a bolt action rifle. Everything I tried worked great. Of course that's only two - the Lee and the RCBS ones. I used them as is for low velocity loads and paper patched for full pressure loads.

Thank you for your kind answer,I wonder if you would provide me with the mould designation both lee and rcbs as well as the loading data and velocity if known for both loads low velocity and paper patched.
sincerely

That was a long time ago, but I believe Lee makes two designs and I had the heavier of the two. RCBS only has one. As for load data, you're on your own there but the manuals have plenty. I used imr 4227 for full power and unique for reduced loads, but lots of different powders would work fine.

Those are .510 molds the 500 SW needs .501 ( actually .502+/-

I just looked at the RCBS catalog. It's 50-400-SWC 639.

The Lee one is 501-440 RF. It's the only one they make for the 500. That is a gaschecked design, so should be easier for full loads. I cut the check shank out of mine and paper patched it. Cheaper and more effective.

Interesting! I might need to get me a lever in .500 S&W and see how well it'll work with swaged lead PPB.

Good afternoon
So far our 50 Alaskan has only shot our cast GC and PB with no issues. NOE molds has numerous types that all shoot well in our lever rifle. Have used up to a 525 grainer at 1850 fps. Your shorter brass will be hard pressed to get to those speeds but will easily do all your shoulder can enjoy.

I just got the model 89 rifle and ordered a mold from Accurate Molds of a Keith style in 450 gr. Lee makes a 440 gas check design that will work also. Overall cartridge length must be 2.15" or a little less in the Big Horn Armory lever action. 10 grains of Unique will make a nice mild plinking load with no pressure issues unless you double charge which would be bad.

As bore size gets bigger, cast boolits come into their own, in all regards. For really nice designs check out Veral at LBT, I have 2 molds from him for the .500, a 500 grainer and a 700 grainer, both look deadly.

I haven't done this in a while but I used to cast one of the Lee 50 caliber modern minies and shoot it out of my Handi rifle. That boolit looks like a huge HBWC and weighs 165 grains. I loaded it over 7 grains of Unique. The mold selection for the 500 S&W becomes much larger when you include all the 50 cal Lee black powder boolits. I used ww/tin mixtures. Maybe I'll get back into that.

Sorry, the 500 big wadcutter weighs 365 grains.
