Shot Shell Loading - Single Stage

Some of you my know, I have been collecting Ideal/Lyman Shot Shell Loading tools for a couple of years now.
These tools have taught me patience and a love for the craft.

I'd like to share a couple pictures of the single stage loading using a couple of older Lyman tools.

I apologize for the sideways pictures, the system seems to work when it wants to, all the pics were taken the same way....

Everyone knows the process:
1st - the tools
2nd - the press

De-prime and re-size - No Pics
Re-prime
Add powder - No Pics
Wad Chamber
Add Wad - No Pics
Wad Seater - 40# pressure
Add Shot
Pre-crimp chamber
Final Crimp

I don’t blame ya one bit.. I do the very same thing, with the exception of a old rock chucker. I used to use the spartan, but I needed a press with the bushing on top for the all brass shots shell stuff from RCBS. It is such a kick doing it that way. Just cuz you can.

Did you ever find the old Lyman Slug kit from the 50’s. I think it was a swage kit, with a mold, sizer and who knows what else. I never knew they existed till somebody around the forum posted a pic of the whole set.

I finally found all of the parts and pieces for the 12 gauge kit. It makes a rifled slug that is about .685 diameter. These fit well in a 12S3 wad with a 20 ga nitro card under the slug.

My plan is to modify the mold pin (make it smaller) to gain nose weight and wall thickness on the slug and see if these perform any better.



I just saw two kits on ebay today 90% complete, both need knock out rods, one in 20 gauge and one in 16 gauge. You'll need a EZY loader to use these, these will destroy an AA turret press.

Nice job! Nice to see a guy enjoy his play time! One comment avout the crimp might be helpful....a little less pressure seating the wad would probably eliminate the gap. Or a thin overshot card before crimping so you don't lose shot. using a dipper may not be the most consistent either for shot. Weigh a few dips, might just need a few more pellets. Not much more versatile than a 12 gauge. Keep having fun with those classic old tools. Heck, I drive around in an old Land Cruiser (1971) just because!

I found and purchased the 20 ga "kit". The 16 ga did not show up so I messaged the seller. Could you post a picture of your complete 12 ga set?

Ok so the die impresses rifling into a lyman forstner slug. Push the slug in with the knobed core pin. Then use the knock out rod to push the slug back out of the die. What threads are on the die?

The die is to be used in the center station of the Lyman EZY Loader.

The thread size is 7/8 - 14

I wonder if your 12 ga loading dies would work in my Hand Press?

Been looking for a set of 12 ga dies that would work in my press and so far all I can find is the RCBS Cowboy Die for loading Brass shells. All it does is knock the primer out and size the hull and I guess it will do a small roll crimp (on brass) Be nice to be able to do a fold crimp too.

That die is kind of pointless unless you are doing Brass Shells as I can do more than that to a hull with my Hand Dies.

The LnL version of my press uses a 1 1/4-12 thread in the top plate to mount the LnL Adapter Bushing, just like most conventional presses use, so the RCBS Cowboy Die will work, they just need to come up with a crimp die to go along with it.

I will talk to them at SHOT about coming up with something.

Like with most Lyman threads, these are an odd ball size.
1.095 x 28TPI

Some of the Lyman AA Turret presses were setup for this die as well as the Comet press.

As most of you know, I have an assortment of "Vintage" shotshell presses and they are fun to restore and play around with. Most of you probably know this but I'm kinda new so bear with me. If you want a press that makes beautiful shells get yourself a Ponsness_Warren. With the fully supported hull and taper adjustment on the crimp die they put out a shell to be proud of. Got my first one and am already thinking of a second. Gp
