I got busy and made up 1400 bullets. These are 460 grain Lee 500 S&W bullet. I paper patch them and size them for my rifles.
I had a few friends that wanted some so I made a big batch. I added a 380 ACP round for size comparison. They are weighed +- 1 grain. They are hardened to 6.5 BHN. I separated them into lots so I can re test for hardness in about a month.

I go to high spots and drop the bullets on them. :Fire:

Ron you have been busy making your "medicine ball boolits". Lots of potential meat for the freezer in those buckets! Nice job and I look forward to hearing the stories about the many hunts and game that they bring to the pot.

Nice batch Ron.

I am still searching for some soft lead to make some for myself. Thanks to your lessons I am still shooting the BACO 450gn PP bullet.

This rifle was the one I started out shooting them in.

Ron, where do you find the soft lead? All I can find around here are wheel weights.

Stick on wheel waights are commonly soft lead

The biggest I ever made were 400 gr. when I had a .480 Ruger.....And they will drain a 20 lb. pot in short order, even if it was a single cavity mold!

Ron,

I assume all of the rifles you shoot those wonderful slugs in have fast twist barrels?

Yes all my 50's have 1-28 twist, green mountain stainless steel barrels.

When did you acquire a "460 gr." mold? I only see a 440 from Lee.

When pouring pure lead the Lee mold comes out closer to 460 gr. At least mine does.

Gotcha, btw those bullets look better than mine!

Most of the stick on wheel weights that I can find are zinc.

Still looking for pure or nearly pure lead.

PS ron, I saw in your sticky thread you get yours from Rotometal. Thanks.

Charlie is right. The 440 gr Lee bullet comes out at 458 to 460 grains depending on the alloy or lack of it. I like to use a pinch of lead shot to increase the hardness to .038-.040 or so on my Cabine tree hardness tester. That is about 6 to 7 BHN.
And yes I get my lead from Rotometals.
