I'm curious what you all think that a Savage 219 in 30-30 might be worth? The gun is original, and in excellent condition, but is certainly no collectable Winchester Hi Wall or anything. I like the looks, and balance of them, but functionally they are very similar to the Handi rifles.

I purchased mine several months ago in really good condition for $175 and thought that I got a good deal. Local supply and demand will dictate price to a large degree. How common are they in your area? They are awful scarce in my part of the world. I don't think that I have seen a dozen in the last fifty years but have seen hundreds of Handi Guns and owned several in the last few years. I personally feel that the Model 219 is much more desireable than the Handi Gun and worth more money. Just keep in mind that the new Remington ModelSR 18 is available for $277 and is probably better than either. I gotta get a couple before the price goes up. Neil

The place that has the 219 I saw wants $350 for it, and I thought that was a bit of a stretch. They are a very nice simple gun.

I would definetly spend the money for a new Remington SPR 18. Less money! Probably better gun! I have got to handle a couple now and they seem to handle well. I talked to a few owners and they seem very happy with them. They have hammer forged barrels with the hammer marks left on the exterior similar to what Mannlicher did a few years back. I despise the shape of the modernistic stock but I consider it a small penalty to pay considering the rest of the rifle. I still have a bit of stock wood laying around and it should be relatively easy to whittle out a more pleasing handle. It is available in both 7.62X39 and 308 and these should be ideal for those of us that cast. If you don't like the metric you can always run a reamer up it's rump and end up with a 303 Brit with a nice, tight chamber. Neil

I think I paid around 175$ for my 219 in 30-30 not long ago. Mine had a horrific trigger, which was relatively easy to fix. It is a cast boolit shooting machine, (I think anyways).

311291's run right around 1/2" at 50 yds for 5, and I just tried the GB 165 Sil boolit yesterday, and had 4 in .451" until I ruined the last shot. I like mine, but not enough to spend 350$ on another.

Well, I just "happened" by that gun shop again today, and the 219 is gone so I guess someone thought it was worth that kind of money. They also did have a Remington SPR18 in stock too, but it was in .223, and I don't need one of those now. I also looked at a CZ carbine in 7.62x39. Seems that would make a nice light modern 32-20 +. Ah choices, isn't it great!

A carbine in 7.62 X 39 would have more power than a .32-20 but be less flexible than the olderster at the low end.

A great pick though!

Trouble is that a 7.62x39 won't do anything at either end that my 30-30's won't do. :-)

Hmmm! Run a 303 Brit through the 7.62X39 sizer and trim. Presto! A 7.62X39R. Now wouldn't that be nice in the Remington? Neil

Wouldn't it be nice if they just decided to make a reasonable single shot in some of those nice calibers anyway. Most shooting doesn't require lightning bolt power at hundreds of yards, and the art of having fun needs some help these days.
