View Full Version : How do you guys carry spare rounds for hunting/shooting

I’m fairly new here and want to ask a question. Hopefully this is a good section and it hasn’t been discussed in depth else where.

How do you guys carry your spare rounds when your hunting or shooting in the woods? Do you guys just dump a bunch in your pockets, do you use a cartridge slide on your belt, a shell holder on the butt stock? I ask because the only acceptable way I have found is on the gun. I don’t like the pockets, and I usually use the waist belt on my pack so the cartridge slide wouldn’t work. Looking for other options if you guys have any. Thanks in advance for the replies!!

I have been known to stand 5-6 rounds up in the watch pocket in my jeans. There are ammo carriers that hold 5 or 10 rounds enclosed that fit in a pocket. Another Ive seen done is buy 2 elastic wrist wraps ( Sweat Bands). sew them together front and back edges leaving loops for 2-3 cartridges I have one made up and with a falling block when you open the action your hand is close to them and them are held oriented and secure. Mine has the front sewed around the entire edge. this makes a closed loop. 3 rounds slide in from the back with rims exposed.

Found a few rounds in the woods lying under the fence and figured they fell from someone's pocket as they crossed the fence. Seven in the 30-30 and box of 20 in my pack.

That’s a pretty slick idea! I like that they are close and tour mot searching around for stuff. Thanks Country!

Old bear, that’s currently what I do. Have the box mag loaded. And another 20 in the pack. It’s more often then not that I drop my pack to put a stalk on and sometime ( sorry to say) but 3 wasn’t enough.

I often use the breast pocket of my Filson Cruiser vest.

It is like this one, but without insulation and without being the dreaded "Tin Cloth". I don't know if they still make it. it will hold 8 .45-100 cartridges if necessary.

I use one of those elastic sleeves that slips over the stock, and typically have ten elastic "tubes" that the rounds slip into. Will put six or seven rounds in it. With a magazine fed rifle, I will load three or four rounds and the rest are backup. Will usually carry another ten in one of those plastic sleeves that come with Federal factory rounds in my fanny pack. The sleeves also work well with single shots for quick acquisition. When the rifle comes out of the case, the rounds are close at hand.

The only problem with the elastic stock sleeves is that they tend to slide down the stocks taper, towards the pistol grip. Solved that problem by melting a hole about a half inch from the rear bottom edge of the sleeve, that slips over the sling swivel stud, and problem solved. I used a large nail, heated with a propane torch to melt the hole.

I like the watch pocket idea, but here in the frozen tundra, the pants with the watch pocket is usually under the insulated bibs!

If you wear a toboggan in cold weather, stick a few in the fold.

Magazine full and five or so in the cartridge loops of my gun belt. If no gun belt, then my pocket. If I am hunting men, that is another story.

Cartridge belt for the single shots, belt pouch for the repeaters.

I use an old rubberized belt slide that holds 5 rounds of .06 or .30-30. Fits in pocket or on my belt. Use the 12 round leather cartridge slide for Revolver ammo. Fits in the front pocket of my britches.
But I prefer to carry ammo on my belt, and a daypack on my back.

Of course if you're hunting Jackrabbits you're gonna NEED A LOT MORE ammo then 10-20 rounds.
Then ya gotta .50cal ammo can strapped to your back.

But I haven't been able to Hunt for 20yrs. So it's moot point for me.

Thanks guys. I had to look up what a toboggan was[emoji848] I hope I didn’t date myself but that’s a good idea, that would have never crossed my mind.

If it's for a Pistol you could carry a couple spare magazines (for something that will hold that round; Doesn't have to be the same gun)
Same for Rimfire
Rifles, I've used those MTM "Ammo wallets by Case-Gard", they can work pretty well.
And I've made my own wood blocks to carry ammo.
Speed Strips could work well if your gun matches the base diameter that one of those uses.
Could make your own carrier if you can sew (I am thinking a zippered case with elastic loops.)

Usually like this. But, it does depend on what the caliber is.

/\ The best answer /\

If 4-5 additional rounds are desired they can go in a zippered or buttoned pocket; there's no need for speed to get to those rounds. Take one of the 10 round plastic dividers that comes in Federal ammunition boxes and cut it in half. Put the spares in that so they don't rattle and stuff the whole thing in a pocket.

If using a single shot rifle, then something like the cartridge slide in post #15 would be useful.

Pocket in warm weather or for 22's I got one of those Tandy "thumb purses". Can't believe how handy that thing is. Cool/cold weather the cartridge loops in the pockets of my hunting coat has worked admirably for over 50 years. Make that first shot count and you don't have to worry about where or what your extra ammo is in.

My Win 94 .30-30 has a sling with pockets for 6, plus one of those elastic slide on carriers.

Most of my single shots have either the elastic carrier or a strap on carrier. Adds virtually no weight and a lot of functionality.

And as noted above, a hole for the sling stud keeps them in place.

5 slugs in the shotgun, 3 or 4 in my coat pocket, but very seldom have I needed to put more in the shotgun.

I use a repro McKeever USMC (!) pouch. In the smaller surplus pouch is an Altiods tin containing a 'pull through' and patches.\

This fall, I carried my binos in a Marsupial's Harness

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1047/5936/products/Coyote_Closed.jpg

On the right and left sides, it has small pockets that are perfect for 5 .38-55 or .38-72 cartridges.

Also great for carrying binoculars as well.

A factor some might forget, in winter and very cold weather having the ability to keep the cartridges somewhat warm is a consideration. Although, Hodgdon's line of Extreme powders does help with pressure fluctuations. Keeping 4 or 5 shells quietly in a warm pocket is always a good strategy.

My daddy says you only need two rounds when you go deer hunting. One to shoot the deer with and one to signal for help. Since you really need three to signal help I will put four in the mag and one in the pipe, just to have a spare. If I am going on an all day hunt I might put a few extra rounds in a backpack with some food, a dry pair of socks, some toilet paper and a lighter. All of which might come in handy at some time.

Seriously, if it takes more than 5 shots to get your deer or other large game you need to spend some more time at the range.

Mr_Sheesh

I tended to carry more rounds than some, but that's because I've heard some real horror stories about people meeting meth cook lab crews out in the boonies; If that happens to you and you're down to 3 rounds, and those guys decide to kill you to prevent having to move their cook site, that would be a BAD day for you. Unlikely? Sure. Worth carrying another 5-10 rounds or so? You decide for yourself.

That is sooooo true BrentD. Although, any thought as to where one could find out what kind of studies have been done to see if there really is no effect of temperature on black powder pressure during hot or very cold temps.

And although I use both black and smokeless always keeping a thought on what your cartridges are made of it is a factor that can get lost in the busy activities of a hunt.

Some of my activities toward my custom hand made wooden block carriers.

When I am hunting I use one of the elastic shell carriers designed to slip over the buttstock but will wear it on my left forearm, I'm right handed. Makes it easy to reach for a quick follow up shot. Also makes it easy to grab another round to top off the magazine on a repeater.

Thanks for all the replies guys, some good advice! And some stuff I would have never thought about. Still really liking a couple extra in the winter hat. If I’m going to run into the meth lab, hopefully I’m carrying the 6.5 creed with the nightforce. hopefully they won’t see that coming from 900 yards

Thanks Italia1825. I was in need of a project. Took me about a week or so to get it done. Took longer for Amazon to get me the Hunter leather carrier than to get the project finished. Sometimes working in a cabinet shop has its advantages. lol

With a loaded rifle, I usually drop a couple loose in my pocket. In my pack, I usually have at least a half dozen or more vacuum sealed with my kitchen meat vacuum sealer for those "just in case" events. If I where to get lost / hurt / etc. I have a small CLEAN AND DRY cache to make me feel better. Having never used the cache, I just keep reusing the sealed package all season.

For years, I used a (Federal, I think) red plastic belt slide out of one of their ammo boxes that I found some where. 5 Rounds, no problems. Never used more than what was in my rifle magazine, anyway.

I'm trying a cheap butt sleeve out this year. I like it because I can keep the rifle and ammo right together for storage and transport. I just have a short clear walk to the stand. If I was knocking through the woods, I'd be sure to get one with a flap as I don't trust the loops to hold onto a shell when clambering through brush etc.

I realize that this is caliber specific, but quite a few folks use a single shot 30/30. A Moisin Nagant stripper clip will hold 6 30/30 rounds that you could keep in a jacket pocket. Easy access. Would work for an extra reload for a model 94 or a 336 either one, as well.

5 in my rifle and 6 in my revolver while hunting deer. If im hunting small game just 1 box of shotgun shells in my game jacket. If im using my 22 for tree rats just a tub full of ammo in my Marlin 60. Now range trips that is a different story lol.

I have some MTM hinge top plastic belt carriers that hold 20 for my '06, 30-30, 303 Sav, and 35 Rem....but for my 45-70 I use a Chinese leather ammo pouch that I got from a Mil-Surp place. It holds 10 extra rounds above the 5 my rifle holds...its enough.

Whether I'm hunting with a repeater, or a single shot rifle, I always use the same Uncle Mike's butt cuff. Black nylon elastic that holds 6 or 9 rounds, and fits almost every rifle caliber I own. I move it to whatever gun I'm using, and put the cartridge loops on the off side from my cheek.
They're dirt cheap, and a 2nd cartridge is right where I want it if I need to grab any quickly. They make them with open loops, or a flap that can be closed over the cartridges.

25 yr ago I was given my grandfather's Hunters cartridge wallet like on page 2 that MOA fitted . It had an old Winchester paper box inner pack with the paper divider in it . Took me 10 seasons to shoot the 20 rounds of 06' . Empties and unloads back in the box . No rattle , no jingle .
I used the FC box separators/belt carriers for many years also . They were ideal for x57 , 308 and 410 . A little short for 06' .

So the Hunter's box for rifles .

I have an N frame in 45 ACP and S&W a couple of moon clips of 6 shots in a shirt/vest/or jacket pocket has done fine for 3 seasons . The actual S&W cases are saved for the range . On long walks I took a day pack with a half box of whatever . I carried a 45 Colts or 357 for several years , 6 in the gun 18 in the box .
Short walks just the wallet and a few extra in a pocket .

I did carry an XD40 one season ...... So if you have a 10mm just an extra mag or 2 maybe even on the holster .

A few years ago you still get the 6 round double pouch "cop belt" cases for 38/357 or 44 mag , a hold over from the revolver days . I had them when I worked armed security in the mid 90s for 38/357 .

I've seen wrist band shell carriers for 6-8 rounds .
There's always the Ponco Via bandoleer .

..............VERY low tech. You can simply cut out the rear pockets of some old blue jeans, and with the aid of a large safety pin you have a "Stick Anywhere" extra pocket.

This one was 'Re-purposed' into a twin mag pouch for my Ruger MkII 22 pistol.

I have an all leather ammo pouch dated 1888 and made in Germany. Probably for the 43 mauser but the individual pockets are in excellent shape and the outside looks like its a few years old. There are brass buttons on either side so you lift both flaps on each side and the case opens back to front. Holds 20 rounds but I don't put cartridges on the top and lower level on each end. Has two heavy leather straps that a leather strap can slide through. I've tried it with 45/70 ammo and ot fits like it was made for that cartridge. About 1/3 bigger than the ones you see the calvary soldiersAnd color is mostly brown. Frank
