Are they supposed to come like this? Obviously this will dig into the stock if I can even manage to get the screws to start. Did the profile change over the years? If these are meant to be bent to fit, what is the normal procedure?

My rifle is a model 1899 made in 1915, I believe.

Old sights best for old guns

If that is the correct sight it should follow the profile of the tang. Unless someone changed the profile before you got it.

I don't see any evidence that the profile of my rifle was modified at some point and this IS the sight that Marbles sells for the Savage 99. I guess I am going to have to contact them and see what they advise.

I have put new Marble's on new Savages and on old Savages and they fit fine -- same tang contour from 1895 to the 1970's as far as I know. That one in your picture looks to me to have too much bend -- I am thinking you have a defective Marble's sight there. Give Marble's a holler -- they owe you a replacement.

.

I would just give the forward/bent section of the base a few (padded) love taps to make it conform to the rifle mounting area.

I have 3 of then, all needed some CAREFUL bending, straightening to properly fit the tangs of multiple Savage 99's and 1899's. I used a hardwood dowel and a hardwood block to avoid damaging the sight. I too thought something was out of order when I tried the first one, then I checked the other 2, all new, and found that was just how they were.

Get your money back and then spend whatever it takes to put yourself into a vintage Lyman or Marble's tang sight. you'll thank me.

I have a vintage Marble's tang sight for the 99 I'll let go for $100 if anybody wants it.
