I should say fat on doe
shot a doe this past Sunday just got it quartered
and the amount of fat on it was almost 2"in places
the rear hams and the entire top of the back and ribs
was covered in fat with the rear end having the most
any of you notice anything similar?

Ours are getting fatter because of corn feeding them thru feeders. I see it bought at the seed stores by the ton. Also rice bran in all kind of flavors. Peanut butter, persimmon, apple etc.

Deer around here eat corn and soybeans to get fat.

The fat layer is a direct result of the feed the deer is getting. Feeding on grasses, acorns and roughage results in much less fat also the terrain has some to do with it in the woods and before mentioned feeds they are more suceptable to predators and on the move more. In the fields there is all that's needed right there food in the form or corn soybeans wheat, Very good cover to protect them and water is usually nearby. Making for a High protein diet with little expenditures of energy.

Does generally have a "saddle" of fat on them, helps them keep warm and provides nourishment for the fetus through the cold winter. Yes, I have seen that before.

I got a pretty fat doe on Saturday, I only field dressed her but I bet she had some good fat content. Around here there are corn and soybean fields everywhere this time of year, with a few feeders thrown in. We have our share of coyotes but not enough to keep their numbers down (and we don't want more), so they are healthier and healthier each year.

I'm always impressed by how much fat ours always seem to have too. Then again, where I hunt is farmed, milo and soybeans mostly, so they live in a grocery store.

Our deer have very little fat, maybe 1/4-1/2" on the back and none in many places. There are a few corn and soybean fields around, but very few over 10-20 acres. I think they coyotes keep them moving as well, keeps them from getting too fat. BTW, our venison tastes great! Much better than the Northern WI deer I ate growing up. No waxy tallow in your mouth at all.

Odd thing ive noticed is when shooting does on the farm that live and eat in the same place one my have fat an inch thick and the next one has barely any. I don't think its as much of a difference in what they eat its how much they eat and there metabolism. Just look at two humans both can eat the same thing every day and one will have a pot belly and another doesn't.

Like the mentioned deer, the hunters tend to buy bigger sizes in clothes nowadays. My frame used to whistle in the wind but now my 40" belt has shrunk tight.

I hunt in 2 different areas. In South Arkansas pine timber is a big industry and the deer are smaller. Think marginal nutrition and over crowding. Here where I live its mostly farm land. A little cotton, lots of rice, soy beans and corn. The deer are larger and healthier but there are fewer of them.

Like Lloyd said, I see different amounts of fat on deer from the same area. Some have yellow fat and some is whiter and some have a lot while others don't have much. I've eaten deer from both places and can't tell much difference in taste. That being if the deer was properly cared for.
