View Full Version : Casting Boolits - How I do it

Today I cast up about 100 of the 429244 HP .44 mag boolits I use for deer hunting. I have a little table in the garage where the casting is done. I use a dipper pot and dipper tools. I use high heat thick cotton gloves when working with hot tools and molten lead. (I also wear glasses to protect my eyes.) I have on the table a marble bottom from a trophy where I set my hot tools. The drill holes keep my hot tools from rolling around. I also have a small brass brush for brushing the inside faces of the mould in case some bit of lead gets on the face causing flashing. I also have a small metal wire brush for brushing lead off the tools keeping them clean. Lastly, I have a couple of copper wire punches for punching out any lead sprues that gets stuck in the sprue hole. The copper is softer than the metal sprue plate so it doesn't damage the pour hole. All my ingots I always label them with a magic marker. They all look the same to me, so marking them Pure lead, WW's lead or 50/50 alloy helps me to keep the ingots separate for future casting sessions. Some of these things I do may help a newbie to casting make their casting sessions more enjoyable. My set up isn't big or fancy, but it turns out really good boolits.

That's about like mine except I cast on top a table saw out on car port. What's going on with the bottom pour pot or is it a bottom pour?

That used to be a bottom pour pot, but it always leaked so badly I closed off the bottom pour spout and made it a dipping pot. There is a working bottom pour to the left and behind. You can see part of it in the pic.

The mould has made good boolits. I have shared them with some other folks. My nephew likes them in his Ruger redhawk. I loaded a box for myself but haven't shot them yet !!

I'm glad to see I'm not the only ladle caster. Many would have you believe only bottom pour pots will work...ain't so. A open top pot and Lyman ladle will still turn out quality boolits. Your example proves it.
Your set up looks a lot like mine , nothing fancy...I don't even have a PID or hot plate...moulds heat up on the pot.
You newbe's don't need to go into much debt to cast good boolits, what Ohio Rusty is showing you will do it.

L 2 swats= pure lead

Batch 1 = I 2 =II one strike for one two strikes fo a 2 etc.
