Has anybody out there found a listing of Lyman sizing dies and their appropriate top punches. I've been reloading for many years. Smokeless powder cartridges and shotshell. I recently acquired a Lyman 4500 lube/sizing press. Now I'm in the process of buying sets of dies and top punches. I've found little info on the Lyman website and have yet to find a dependable cross reference for said sets. Already purchase a 460 top punch for .429 die and found it doesn't work. Any help would be appreciated.

What I'm gonna do is call Lyman when I go to buy mine and ask them. You're right. Most of the numbers for the top punches don't correspond to the diameter bullet your needing it for. I love Lyman equipment but the top punches are a pain.

In the older Lyman loading manuals they listed the corresponding top punch and seater stem for their cast bullets.

Geez. I never thought to look in mine and see if it was there. I've got the 48th 49th and the cast book. I'd bet it is in there. Thanks.

I hadn't thought of that. I have a couple of Lyman manuals. Will check. Thanks a lot, Iowa Fox!

wow top punches will cross calibers a lot;i.e. 30-30, 30-40K, 30-06. 300 Savage, 300 H&H, 300 WinMag,30 Herret, etc.,etc. Sizing dies also. So get the die size you want and top punch to match. Most manufacturers will tell you which comes standard. Generally found with the mold data. You might want to creat your little data sheet for the loading table.

I always found it safer to make mine using boolit formed hot glue on the tip.

This Lyman Cast book has the best listing of info in the back. I'll be happy to check a Lyman bullet # for anyone if its listed. Years ago I purchased a very early version of the 225415 but didn't get a top punch with it so I purchased a new 415 top punch. It left a ring on the nose when I used it, I called Lyman and they had me send it in with a couple of bullets and they reworked it for me at no charge. Its the only one that didn't fit perfect and come to find out the 225415 has probably had more changes to it than any other bullet in their line up. I like Lyman seaters because they offer seating stems to match the bullet, they have had some real pointy ones like the 429303.

Here is another interesting link with bullet descriptions, history in some cases, weight and top punch info.

That is the 1st edition but it is not numbered. Came out in 1957, same year as Hand Book #41.

That's what I thought. Now the search begins.

Cornell Publications has them.

Here's a link to their lyman cast page. They list the 1958 First addition. Different cover. $24.95

https://www.cornellpubs.com/searchResults.php

This one is listed as 1973 black and white version. It has same cover as Iowa fox shows. $19.95.

BrassMagnet turned me on to them for manuals.

I've had this reference list saved for years ... (it's a Word document and unfortunately copying and pasting has put the formatting a bit askew)

I've used the LYMAN catalog & Reloading Manuals for years. The cross reference from the LA Metallic Silhouette Club is Excellent. I've printed it out and it's come in very handy. But It's not perfect.

I found that out the hard way. Spent a few hours trying to size a LEE #401-170-TC with a TP that was TOO BIG to fit inside the sizing die. In some cases if the TP won't go down inside the Sizing Die, then some bullet designs won't be pushed deep enough into the die to put lube into the grooves.
After putting on my readers to read the numbers on the TP, I noticed the TP didn't go into the die. So the bullet wasn't pushed down far enough to be lubed. Tried other TP in my collection. Found one that worked perfect, #311. Pays to have a goodly # of TPs.

I'm thinking about seeing if Lyman has an entire kit of top punches. I know it'd be mostly but then at least I'd have them all.

Finally had time to look in my book. Yep there it is. Listed with each bullet mould is the top punch number and part number.

After 50 years of fooling with top punches that are listed as correct....but don't fit worth beans, I do one of two things.
1.) Make a perfectly fitted nose punch with a cast boolit and a small ball of epoxy putty...these fit exactly !

2.) With any and all boolit's that have a flat spot ...SWC , WC , RF, TC ...use a flat nose punch.
I have made flat ones by filling any nose with epoxy , let set up and sand it flat.
Flat punches actually work quite well and can seat many different profiles.

Sure beats having a bunch of seating stems that in real life fit nothing exactly .

GaryAfter reading your response I'm thinking of getting one top punch for a reference for the bottom of it to and then getting a friend of mine with a lathe to just make me what i need for size and depth then either use epoxy as you suggest or hot glue to form the tip.

That's my favorite Lyman manual. That's the second edition. I believe there is a copy of number one on Cast Pics. If I can find it, I'll post a link.

I did email Lyman to see if they had a set. They responded today. They don't have that offered but the gentleman said he was going to pass my suggestion along to the product development staff.
