Bisley Love...

Oh dear Lord fellas,
Lot of you guys have seen some of my post recently, about my quest looking for my next Ruger. I had especially been interested in the Bisley grip, but none of the local shops had one, much less many single actions at all. Well, yesterday me and one of my oldest sons went to a guitar show/expo in Philly. That's about 3 hours or so from me. On the way back we had to drive right past a Cabelas, so we stopped in. Five minutes into the gun department and there she was. Lights shining down from heaven and the angels were singing...lol. It was a Lipsyes Super Bkackhawk, stainless with a 6.5 inch barrel, in 480 Ruger. I couldn't believe how good in felt in my hands when the guy handed it to me. OMG.. It felt like Ruger designed it just for me. I definitely love the feeling of the Bisley grip. Yes I know holding it isn't the same as shooting it, but it definitely got my attention. It's a good thing I haven't received my Christmas bonus from work yet, cause if I'd had the cash last night I would have been the proud owner of a Bisley 480 Ruger..:) Was worth the 3 hour drive.

I have the same gun, the 6.5 inch. I got a smoking deal on at at Cabelas as a scratch and dent. It had a little swirl mark near the muzzle where someone must have wiggled wrong during polishing. They had knocked a bunch off for it and I went home with it.

It is fast becoming my favorite of all my Bisleys. I have Ruger Bisleys in everything from 22 to 480 with the exception of 327 and 454. I also have a 357 Maximum with a Bisley grip and a Linebaugh built 500LB. To say I like the Bisley grip frame would be an understatement.

The 480 is a truly great cartridge. It can run mild or you can stand on the gas pedal and make it really rock. I like mid range loads with heavy bullets. I like to load 400-420 grain bullets to 1000-1100 fps. Very little on this earth would stand up to that load.

I hope you get the 480. I'm sure you'll find it a fun and very useful round.

I have a 5.5" stainless bisley in 41 mag and just picked up a 4 5/8 stainless bisley in 480 Ruger, I love both. Now got to get a load setup for the 480, should be a great hog hammer.

I just watched a video from Lipseys and the guy from Gunblast.. The Lipseys rep shooting the 480 with the 4 5/8 brrel, said he thought the recoil felt less with the shorter barrel. He said he guessed it was due to the 6.5" throwing more weight upwards during recoil.. Anyone agree with that concept..lol. Personally I don't think the 2" would make much difference, although I would agree that the shorter barrel would be easier to carry.

I've carried the 6.5 inch on a few hunts and never felt it was too much to carry on my belt. I wear wide suspenders when I have a holster on my belt (which is pretty much all the time) regardless of the gun I'm carrying. I get tired of hitching my pants up all the time and the suspenders distribute the weight a little better. I've not shot the 4 5/8 inch 480 so cannot comment on it. I know the shorter 44 mags I've had in the past seemed to have a bit more snap in the recoil than my 7.5 inch Bisley 44.

I personally love the looks of the 6.5", and it does have longer sight radius. Of course the 4 5/8 is a beautiful handgun as well. Rivers Rock..lol

Based on ease of carry, the 4.62" barrel is better. But to each their own. I like the looks of the 4.62" ejector rod housing far more, but that is a personal preference. I do like my 5.5" Blackhawk

I love my Bisley. I bought it back in '02. Had Hamilton Bowen tune it up a bit. I think the Bisley grip frame does deal with recoil a bit better than the plowhandle, but there are a few different renditions of those and my understanding is some do better than others. I feel that the Bisley is also maybe a tad better for precise shooting, where the Plowhandle feels "faster".

If there's two guns I love it's a 5-1/2" Bisley (chambered in just about anything) and a 4-5/8" Plowhandle. I had the full size plowhandle convertible at one time, I think I'd like another on the Flattop Frame.

I have "meat hooks" for hands, If I could find a good aftermarket grip for my Bisely I might like it. I love my RSBH with the aftermarket grips.

I’ve got a 6.5” 480 Ruger SBH and have to confess, it’s quite the big bore. I had Doug guy fix up my SRH cylinder and now need to get him to work his magic on the SBH cylinder. There is a near 45 degree entry to the throat and it prevented the 420+gr from chambering fully. I love launching an ounce of lead at 1100 FPS and having the dirt from the backstop rain down.

I have several Bisley gripped Rugers. Love them. I also have the 6-1/2" 480 mentioned. To get better ballistics (in my opinion,) the longer barrel is my choice. I have enjoyed introducing many a shooter to a "manly" caliber in that gun. Not too bad of recoil,, (vs. my 454 Casull,) and accurate. But it is still a big bore!
If you liked it that much,, you should plan a return visit ASAP,, and own the gun!

Take a look at the Hogue "cowboy" oversized grip panels. They are thicker than factory panels and I really like them. I don't have large hands but like the way the thicker panels distribute recoil.

I had the 6.5" gun and sold it to fund the 4 5/8" model. I've shot the same loads through the shorter tube and I feel it recoils less as well. I would guess shorter barrel time for the bullet and slight loss of velocity.

45 Colt both standard and plus P, along with 44 mag. and special are all my 58 year old hands can stand. Very very little full power 44 mag. I like shooting a lot (75-150 rounds per range session) and recoil spoils a fun time. Ill be fine if I never fire a 480 Ruger, but of course a reloader can make it as mild or wild as they want. But yes, the bisley grip frame is a wonder for single actions.

Beg, borrow or steal the money to RUN back to the store to buy it. If you don't,, you will always lament the loss of not doing so.
The only thing I would do otherwise is to call them & get a manager on the line & request they make sure they still have it,, and ask for a hold on it. A 3 hour drive to find it gone will only deepen the sorrow over not getting it.

I say these things as I teach handgunning,, and one of my lessons is; "Find a gun that fits YOUR hands."

It won't do you any good if it's sitting in the safe at home.
In reading some of John Linebaugh's writings, he has coined the term, the 3 P's. He says that a pistol needs to be Powerful, Practical, and Packable.
If I'm getting in and out of the truck alot, I really like my 4 5/8 stainless 45 colt Blackhawk in a cross draw holster. If I'm sitting in a deer stand, then I don't mind packing a bigger pistol in a BFR bandolier rig.

I load both pretty stout and couldn't be happier with the feel and function of the Bisley grip design. I've been in search of the .41 Mag to round-off my big bore trio of Hunter models, wouldn't mind having the .22LR/.22WRM version as well.

I keep hoping for that person that loves the round trigger guard 44 Mag SS Super Blackhawk and wants to get rid of their SS Bisley, Especially if it is Hunter model.

All of my single actions (except for the single sixs) are Bisley grip frames. They are very comfortable and they really let you ride the recoil.

I have the Bisley Hunter trio and all of them shoot very well. My favortie is the 45 colt but the 41 isnt far behind. I havent seen a 41 Bisley Hunter for sale in a while, but I hope you find one.
