Those neck shots sure are final. Great shot; was it the intended point of impact? I know the 5.56/223 is more than up to the task of small southern whitetail. Took plenty in North and South Carolina and Georgia. Mini 14 was the only rifle I had with me through the entirety of my military service and neck shots put them down fast. Nice buck.

Yes the shot hit right where I aimed. Have scope marked for 100-200-and 300 yds. Hits target every time with no wind, and today wind was calm. About 40’ cool but not bad for me but bad for him,meat in the freezer.

Back a few years ago my brother shot a small 2 point (western count) mully with a 223 Thompson Contender rifle with a scope, at some what over a 100 yds. It was a shot through the spine about 10" below the neck.

At age 12, i shot a buck in the neck, dropped dead. Problem is, i was aiming at the chest.

In my defence , i had to shoot the 30 WCF from my other shoulder. Shot was fired right handed, normally a left hander. Got lucky.

Now at age 74, shooting at the neck at any range is a poor idea. Sorry.

Seen a 7mm Rem Mag bullet pass-through a bucks neck, at close range. . Buck kept going. The next guy in our party, killed it with a chest shot. Got to hit the spine or blood vessel.

Everyone's experiences are different I guess. All the deer I've ever seen that ran away to be found or lost had one thing in common- the classic behind the shoulder shot with an "approved"caliber. I've never had a neck shot fail but that could change. People like to think they can guarantee how a deer dies- but no, they can't.

My shots on deer are almost always very close at unaware and unalarmed deer. I should probably do head or neck shots, just can't get past the idea that a slight miss might result in a broken jaw or some other kind of lingering wound.

Growing up, we had a friend who farmed and was probably the best field shot with a rifle I ever knew. He basically had one rifle, a Remington 722 in .222 and because the season was so long in S.C. and he was outside so much, he shot a lot of deer to feed the family and they were always base of the skull shots, DRT. He saw enough deer that he could afford to be picky about his shots and made them count.

They made .22 centerfires legal for deer here a few years ago. I know the .223 will get the job done with some of the loads and bullets they have for it, even with heart /lung shots. Might have to try it someday, just have too many rifles in the que now.

Good shot, good deer.
I have only taken one neck shot. Deer was head down eating pointed straight at me.
I was 50 yards away 20 feet up in a tree. Hit spine at base of neck with a 357 max. DRT.

just got in the habbit of shooting behind the shoulder. why shoot up a neck when you can shoot up some crappy ribs. That and ill add that I shoot ALOT of deer and if you shoot enough your going to once or twice twitch or jerk the trigger and just that can throw you crosshairs off to make a shot at a 100 yards a miss or wound a deer. Ive tracked a few deer neck shot at camp that ended up with jaws blown off or just a whole in the throat to blead out slowly. Yup if you spine them they drop on the spot but a neck has a lot of area that isn't spine and a head has area that isn't brain. If you want dead right there and don't care about ruining meat a dead on should shot has a lot more room for error and will dump a deer in its tracks. Me, I like necks and shoulders for burger so I don't shoot them in the meat.

I find more usable meat on the neck than the ribs so shoot through the ribs. Great looking buck.

Ive shot ALOT of deer and in my experience a heart shot deer can run just as far as a lung shot deer. Ive seen deer run over a 100 yards with there heart turned to jello by a 257 weatherby. Also found that even though I don't eat guts that hearts work fine in the burger pile. Shoot 30 or 40 deer in the heart and your wasting quite a bit of burger meat. Bottom line though is if your shooting out at 300 yards one behind the shoulder shot might be a lung shot and the next a heart shot. One other thing with heart shots is the heart is pretty close to the front shoulders and its pretty easy to blood shot a front shoulder with bullet fragments when aiming at the heart. half way up the deer about a foot behind the front shoulders is a meat hunters shot. Typically shot like that a deer will take three or four leaps and pile up dead. Rarely do they go more then 50 yards.

This is insane! Everyone knows the only correct shot placement on a deer for an ethical kill is a double tap to the chest and one to the head with a 30-06 BAR followed by a quick throat slit so it doesn’t come back to life like a zombie! :kidding:

On the way to hunting camp one morning I saw the butt end of a deer going through the ditch and property line fence on the driver's side of the roadway. I didn't see another deer all day. End of the day, my Host, a retired Regional Wildlife Biologist, asked if I got a fender on it? When I said no, he stated that I wasn't trying hard enough...that sometime you have to go into the ditch to get them!
