I just got my mold in for the Model 29 Classic I bought and casted some boolits.
Still waiting on Starline for my brass. I was looking in my Lyman Cast Manual and
it stated that the 429421 bullet was made for TC Encores and such, that the overall length was too long for most revolvers. I know some of you guys recomended that boolit. I have a few 44 mag cases and loaded a dummy up and it fits in the cylinder just fine. Its not tight against the forcing cone and the bullet sets back .105" inside the front of the cylinder. It seems fine to me, but I am no
pistol hand. Is there a problem here I dont know about? I have the boolit seated to the outer edge of the crimp groove. The cylinder spins with no problem and the round goes in and comes out with no sticking.

My case is a little short of spec and my OAL is 1.685. The book shows this bullets
OAL to be 1.710 and the max OAL for the caliber at 1.610. I load lots of my rifle
rounds longer than max OAL because the throats are longer. I think I am splitting hairs here but wanted to be sure. If I had my brass in I would probably be shooting instead of asking stupid questions.

I have shot a S**t pile of Lyman 429421's in my various S&W and Ruger .44 Specials and Magnum revolvers. It is a DANDY bullet in most every way.

I did have a Taurus Tracker in .44 Magnum and it's cylinder was too short for the Keith bullet. The answer to that was for me to send the Taurus on it's way...

The Keith bullet was actually created for the .44 Special way before the .44 Magnum OR the TC was even a gleam in it's designers eye. It, however, worked perfectly in the .44 magnum for all of the Rugers and S&W's that I am aware of.

The Lyman 358429, however, was developed by Elmer for the .38 Special. Again, this was before the .357 Magnum was developed. This bullet DID turn out to be too long for the original .357 Magnum (that later was named the Model 27). However, this bullet works extremely well in the Model 19 and 686 due to their longer cylinders.

The 429421 should work fine. The only way you can get in trouble is if recoil starts pulling the boolits. Use sufficient case tension and crimp to prevent that.

Use it in all my 44's, no problem.
Bob Woodward must have written that part in the Lyman Handbook:roll:

I don't know where that idea came from. The 429421 was designed for the .44 Special, what, 60-70 years before the T/C Encore was marketed?! If it's not suitable for the M-29 Smith, I've been doing something TERRIBLY wrong for 35 years - - in several revolvers. It will easily fit the M-29 cylinder when loaded in Magnum cases.

Don't sweat it. That boolit will be one of the best, if not THE best, you'll ever shoot in a M-29. Alliant 2400 and STANDARD large pistol primers will produce very accurate and powerful ammo. If you want midrange loads, try Unique or IMR-7625 (gray label). 900 fps and excellent accuracy, with cases that fall out of the open cylinder under force of gravity.

Been using the 429421 since the mid 80's to great effect. I like it over 7g W231 in a magnum case for @ 900fps which is a "useful" special according to EK. Low recoil, hard hitting and accurate.

Just yesterday I tried my hand at double action with this bullet in my 3" 629-2 at 8 yards and I thought I was missing the target, but in fact I had stuffed 2 cylinders full into one hole measuring 2".

My magnum bullet is the 429244. This is a gas check design by Thompson. I started using this due to the gas check and my lack of knowledge regarding barrel leading issues. I came to find out that it casts 265g from WW and when loaded to @ 1200fps ( 22g W296) it penetrates like no other. Accurate too.

Of course over time I found that oversizing by .001 all but eliminates leading and gas checks were not needed, but I have no regrets and I can enthusiastically recommend this bullet for hunting and general magnum use.

Ditto to all that Snapping Twig said. In 44 Special and Magnum, Lymans #429421 and #429244 are all that gets used around here.

In my M-29 with its' 8" barrel I use the Lee 240 SWC-TL bullet with 8.0 grains of HP-38---gets a velocity of just under 1,000 FPS. With the old Lee 255 SWC (NLA)---same load gets about the same velocity and is very accurate. I like HP-38 as it meters very accurately and one gets many loads out of one pound of powder.
