Harrington and Richardson Huntsman muzzleloader

My local LGS has one of these in new condition for $200. It is a 58 caliber. I'm very familiar with the topper action but I was wondering about the accuracy of these rifles? Does anyone have experience with them? This is the 70's model for percussion caps. Your answers are appreciated, Thomas

I’ve been interested in one of these myself, but I really dislike the percussion caps once I have used the 209’s. But they are breakovers, right? My percussion was an inline.

On several of those you can change out the nipple and use a musket cap nipple. Much hotter.

I had one in the early 70's. There are two versions, the early model ones had a screw-in breech plug the later type had a press-in breech plug.
The one I had was extremely accurate. Sad to say, it was at a time in Ohio when there was not many deer in Ohio, so, I never got a deer with it, but, my guess it would be a very good deer getter.

I used one for a few years, it shot well. It is a 50 caliber, screw in breech plug, and used an orange holder for 209 primers. The only thing I've heard bad is the press fit plugs can be dangerous if you have a hang fire, and open the action. I've never heard of it actually happening to somebody though.

Muzzle loading season starts on the 12th and a guy at my hunting club was checking his sights on a Huntsman. he had converted it from 11 caps to 209 primer.

While not a .58, the Huntsman I bought for my oldest grandson (16 years ago, when he was 11) was a .45 that I converted to 409 primer ignition.

Before I gave it to him (he hunted with me B 4 he got married), I test-fired it with Remington sabot rounds that contained .357 JSP's.

It easily kept all it's shots inside a circle the size of a 3-1/2" teacup saucer @ 100yds.

I never bothered to determine the barrel's twist rate, I just shot it.

None the less, that .45 Huntsman liked the Remington sabots enough to let him take 2 deer with it, one @ 50yds, the other @ 75yds.

That shows to go me that a MOA rifle isn't necessarily a "must-have" for most deer hunting.
