Muzzle Loader elk season opened Saturday. Before daylight we had elk walking by no more than fifty yards from the jeep. It took a while to catch up with them but I started this two year old cows freezer training at 0831 hours with a 385 grain soft cast Lyman great plains bullet ahead of 100 grains of Goex FFg from my Remington 700 50 caliber. Shot was about 75 yards, complete pass through the neck, she was down right there. She went down so fast I didn't see her fall through the smoke. Then the work started. 229894

I guess you don’t need bigger than 50 cal. Looks like it did very good

We have had a huntable population of Rocky Mountain Elk in Pennsylvania for a few years now; all drawn hunts. In the literature put out by the Game Commission, it says to be sure you know how you will get the animal out of there, after it is down. Congratulations on your elk.

Do you normally make neck shots? Why not shoot for the boiler room instead?

Congratulations!

Surprised to see Oregon is allowing "non-traditional" muzzleloaders now...

Personally, every elk I've killed has been a spine shot.

Not always planned that way, it just seems to happen that way.

An elk that is spine shot only goes 6 feet, straight down.

They have for awhile. The cap has to be exposed, no 209 primers, and the rifle has to have open sights. You have to use "loose powder" and no sabotted bullets.

No! It just worked that way this time. Can't complain about the results, tracking was quick and easy.

Had some backstrap last night, oh so good.
