Does anybody have any 10 gauge slug load data?

What I have done is use the weight that is close to the shot load and go with that data and work for me.Someone had sent me some slugs to try on my 10ga side by side and that is what they told me do and it work great.

Greetings BuckWhistler, I personally do not have a 10 ga gun but here is some information from years back.

Another thing you can do is get the Lyman 12 ga 525 slug and get heavier wads and try pushing it through backwards to check for fiction fit at the muzzle should be 6 to 12 lbs for a 10 ga, if yes go ahead and load them up and let the fun begin.
I hope it helps you.

Ajay,

Will you please identify the publication source and date of the of the 10 gauge article you just posted.

Thanks

I cast and load fullbore hollowbase 1.7 oz 10ga slugs. I have launched them at greater than 1,500 fps. The recoil of this slug at +1,500 fps in a 10 pound gun heavy barrel h&r is not for the faint of heart. I found that MVs over 1,300 fps don't add much to useable range.

Hello BuckWhisler, Had I got the 10 ga then I would try Lyman 525 slug in wad and that too in a Trap Commander wad cup only.

The slug fits just right , next try cutting the legs off and get 12 ga Darker nitro card .170 and put it in a 10 ga wad and try pushing it back wards at the first 4 to 5 inch at the muzzle.

You want a fiction fit say 6, 8 or 10 lbs when pushing it.
This is just a safety check before you proceed.
In other words you are beefing the 12 ga slug to fit into a 10 ga

Sadly I can't set it all up for you with the right wad combo, it would have been great fun, tho.
Please post a picture of your gun too, thanks.

I do not know why I keep thinking it will be easy and fun, do it my friend.

I bought a new mould from Accurate Mold the diameter is .730 the slug will be close to 985 grains . I have not cast any yet . The bore on my Ithaca Mag 10 is .725 the gun has a fixed full choke. Your article says to use pure lead so you don't ruin the choke. With pure lead is should swaged down .005 I would think? Whats your thoughts?

Wow, Ithaca Mag 10 simply the very best. Just look at the picture above and the ones measuring .727" or .729 or even .733 and get 10 ga OP wads and some 3/8 felt the black ones from BPI and 1/2 ones load hem on top of the 10 ga OP wads, you can put some darker stiffer nitro cards in between without altering the 12 ga wads. Try a few and see if your gun cycles. Mind you your slug is very heavy at 985 gr. Get 10 ga OP wads with longer skirts for better obturation, say your prayers ! !

UH: The bore on a 12 ga is .730 to .735 depending on maker. 10 ga is probably a little bigger. Might want to remeasure that barrel.

Bore dia of a 10 ga is more like .775.

I have several modern 10ga shotguns and as Randy stated nominal bore diameter is 0.775". I shoot fullbore 10ga slugs through a cylinder choke.

I measured the Ithaca Mag 10 bore with my Brown & Sharp dial caliper again and it measured .728 it is a fixed full choke

There is no way that the bore on this Mag 10 is .775 it isn't even close. Do you have a fixed full choke Mag 10?

Just out of curiosity I measured my three screw in chokes that came with my Remington SP -10 10 gauge shotgun and none of the choke tubes measured .775 they measured .726 which is turkey extra full lead shot only the next one measured .748 which is steel extra full lead full and the last one I have measured .768 which is steel improved modified lead modified. And I double checked my measurements

I think you are confusing choke diameters with actual bore diameter of the barrel.

Yes you are right. What is the best way to measure the bore?

I would do a chamber cast with cerrosafe (spelling?) or pound with soft lead. A telescope gage and a mic would work.

Yes that will work. I read somewhere you get a candle and get it warm or soft then push it past the chamber and forcing cone when it gets hard you pour warm water down the barrel to remove the candle then you measure the wax candle.

I’ve got a device that is in reality an inside caliper that will go six inches down in the barrel . Seems to me nominal bore diameter on most of my Parker 10’s has been about .780” . However most are choked down 30 to 35 thousandths . So I can’t use BB’s larger 10 gauge mold as I’m sure it wouldn’t take many shots to work on the barrels . I can however take his .730” mold and use a .010” Mylar wrap and get pretty decent results .

I’m pretty sure that article was in Gun World . If you notice in the first high lighted section there’s an address and it says “Dept.GW” that was typically what all the gun mags did back the. In an instance like this so hopefully the person receiving the mail would know the inquiry came because of something in a particular magazine . Now as to which Gun World magazine it was in I dunno .

The is such a thing in the Shotgun World known as a Bore Gage. It has a probe that has ball bearings that work against a wedge/cone with a Dial Indicator outside that pushes the balls outward.

You set the probe to a known diameter using a Ring Gage and then the bore is measured plus or minus that set dia.

Many serious Trap Shooters have and use these instruments and a good friend of mine makes one of the best.

There are several guys over at Trapshooters.com who make and sell them.

There are also several versions of the Bore Dia Chart below. and they are all slightly different. but usually +/- .005 on all the dimensions. IE: 10 ga runs .775-.780 12 ga. runs .729-.735 etc.

I have two shotgun friends that have those and I’ve borrowed them a time or two . The thing I have is a bore gauge as well , however the way this one was made I prefer to think of it as inside calipers . I think the type you have pictured does a better job then the thing I’ve got . But since mine was given to me I can’t complain .
