It's been awhile since I've posted anything here, but figured folks might find this interesting. Posted this up on the hunting page as well....
Montana buffalo hunt , original 1876 Winchester 45-60 caliber. Though I've never preferred hollow point boolets, this cast of 40-1 shoots the best in the old Winchester, and I guess I can't complain about the performance. Boolet recovered in the hide on the off side, broke through ribs entering and exiting, really excellent in putting her down. She only went maybe ten feet , of course shot placement is critical, but it was good to see. Shot was at a little over 90 yards and she was moving a bit.
Boolet is cast at .460, and weighs just shy of 360 grains, 60 grains of Olde Eynesford 2ff, .2" compression, and thin card wad, she'll keep 'em all on a playing card at 100 yards if I hold steady enough.
Deer hunting starts in a couple weeks, I'll be toting the ole' 76.
Good luck hunting all,
Big Goose

Nice. Pic's make the rifle look small, which we know it isn't. Good job, Congrats!

Now convince all those Muzzleloaders that need 120 grains of Pyrodex pellets and a45-70 bullet to drop a 150 pound deer. This is typical results from a well developed 45-60 45-70 load. My last buff took one broadside and it went in and out and a dead critter. A Head shot frontal went through the skull and into the 4th vertebrae and caromed off to the shoulder. You don't need a cannon and the old ones git er done! Good shooting and a nice buff.

Well Done!

Very nice rifle and very nice bison, good to see an old gun out doing what it was meant to.

Here's the mold , a Lyman 457122 and I shortened the hollow point in a bit. Really shoots well in this original 76 (45-60) and likewise in my sons' 76s. One has a Chappy in 45-75 (was sort of a kit gun, but is a good shooting rifle, the other has a Uberti in 45-60, also a fine shooter.
The snowy pic was from last April and the group was at 85 yards- all the further I could get without donning snowshoes....
Thanks all,
Big Goose

Should have added that I beagled the mold to cast a .460 boolet.
And yes, sure do agree KCSO, -- I have used an 1861 Springfield musket with 60 grains of 2ff , and 515 grain Minie , a 1816 Springfield and 85 grains 2 ff and patched .672 RB, and a flint Northwest trade gun(12 bore) with 100 grains 1 1/2 f and patched .705 RB. All go right through a bison and kill deer like the hammer of Thor.....
