before I make the investment into all my casting equipment, I started by looking for wheel weights and so far no luck while at the gun range I got maybe five or six lead bullets that should melt down.

My question is there were more bullets that were part jacketed yet some lead left and some full metal jacket with what appeared to be lead in the middle could the lead be melted out

thanks

Heck yeah, the jackets float.

You was thinking right. Wear safety glasses sometime full metal jackets pop.

Most of my shooting is now done with range lead. I average about 100 rnds a week per year out of rifle and hand guns. I use to shoot straight WW and as those became harder to find I switched over to range lead and WW. I have cut my alloy down to 19 lbs of range lead to 1 lb of WW. I get good fill out on the boolits and have so far been able to push them to about 2500 fps with no leading out of my 06. If you have any questions about range lead recovery and smelting send me a PM

Best wishes from the Boer Ranch,

Joe

i do a hardness test on them as i smelt them and if they are between 9 and 13 hardness they go with the ww's.
which means that i use 1/2 range and 1/2 ww's.
especially since at least 75% of the range scrap i get is mine to begin with.

get a bolt cutters and cut the FMJ boolits in half, that way the lead will ooze out.

Otherwise they just get round and don't let the lead out.

I crush the TMJs so the lead can melt out. It's a pain, but usually only a minority are completely jacketed. Some day I'm going to get/make a jacket-splitting tool.

My jacket splitting tool is a shop hammer on an anvil. DALE
