I got a brick of lead marked "Bell systems wiping solder" It seems very hard. Does anyone know what the make up of this lead is?

Although proportions vary, one source I checked said it was 3 parts Pb : 2 parts Sn.

60 Pb / 40 Sn: gives about the maximum "slush range", for modelling the solder into a smooth shape with full coverage over the joint. Around 40 Pb / 60 Sn the melt freezes all at once at the lowest freezing point in the Pb / Sn diagram. This causes confusion if you don't know which element is listed first.

Right - they REALLY don't want you to squeeze it!

Thanks for the info, I thought it would have been 50/50, I have 2 bricks of it.

You are a scoundrel and miscreant. Some short of being nefarious.
I have some lead cable sheathing with this same stuff in the joints. I will treasure the solder. Need the pure lead for the new 1853 Enfield projectiles.

At one time I literally had access to tons of the lead sheathing & solder but did I think ahead & hoard it up? You guessed it.........Nope [smilie=b:

Well at my age there would have been plenty.
