Well I am all worked up over here. Got a new 270 Win. and there ain't many molds that I can find. Now I know this here bran new Win. Mdl. 70 2008 limited edition would love to shoot cast booolets.
Can someone point me in a direction so I can come up with a good mould.
Also with cast bullets in the .270 should I be concerned with bullet weight?
I was thinking 130 grain g/c. Any help would be nice.
I like a bullet that looks like a bullet. I have an old Lyman Cat. and they show three.

I can't find these on Lyman's web page.

Those are all discontinued. They turn up in the used mold market from time to time.

Lyman currently only has one 270 mold (150 grains, I forget the mold number). No one carries it. You can order it directly from Lyman.

Would recommend that you look for the RCBS 270-150-SP. That's still a current production mold that you can find at the retail outlets and has been a good shooter for me.

Works well for me. I would suggest oven heat treating if you plan to push them at any speed (> 1800 fps).

There have been a couple threads here over the last year discussing casting for the 270. Worth searching them up

Gray Wolf,

The recommendation on RCBS 270-150-SP by ktw is a good one. You have a 1:10 twist on that M70, and boolits in the 150 grain range have the length that is more optimum for that twist at 1900-2400 fps. (You can't shoot cast 130's at 3,000 fps like jacketed can.)

Let us know how your efforts come out! There seems to be alot more interest in the O'Connor Special and cast lately.

gray wolf,

I use the Lyman 280642 or the 287346 size to .278". The 7mm mold actually shoots quite well and it weighs in at 135 grains. The 280642 weighs in at right at 150 grains. Both will shoot M.O.A. or a tad bigger most of the time at 100 yards. Good-luck...BCB

BCB:
Do you size the 7mm with gas check down to .278" in one step or do you need to size it at .284" first?

Gray Wolf,

Here are some excellent reads about cast .270's. I've read them all and have them bookmarked. You'll notice that alot of the posts are from the same people...you've already got some excellent advise above!

Gabby M,

I place the 7mm gas check in place an size down to .278". Annealing the gas check previously does help, but I have found it is not necessary. Plenty of Alox is used to help with the "squeeze down". Good-luck...BCB

I can't thank you all enough, That is some great help.
Yes I know the speed has to be slower with the cast bullets. I want to have some fun with my new gift rifle. I had a question about the gas checks for the
7mm on the 270 bullets also, But I guess they work. I will red the Info. you have suggested.

Don't overlook the Saeco #270, you can see a group I shot here, http://www.castboolits.gunloads.com/...&highlight=270
The load data is on the target. Samples if you want some.

Thanks BCB:
I've purchased a 7mm Loverin style bullet Was going to also try sizing for 270. My 270 is a Weatherby Vanguard with the free bore cut chamber. Was thinking the Loverine would fill all that free bore nicely.

Give me another option if I run out of 270 gas checks. I suppose we can order them from Gator?

Maybe flip the gas checks base up and spray them with case lube? Or a dab of Imperial Die Wax on my pinky finger and give them a wipe as they're going in the sizer.

When reducing a boolet that much (.286 down to .278) lead can be moved into the lube and crimp grooves, if you will check, size and LUBE in the 7MM die first then the 270 the lube keeps the lead from moving into the grooves.

I have taken the lovern 8MM from .327 down to .315 in one pass with this method
