View Full Version : Moving to Reno

My wife and I are moving to Reno, Nevada in a few weeks. She has accepted a job there.

I told my wife I would like to buy some land there soon, maybe just ten acres. I would like some land that I can call my own and do pretty much whatever I want.

I concealed carry every day, apparently the average wait time for a ccw permit in Reno is 10 to 11 weeks. I guess I will have to open carry for a while until I get my permit. I'm not really looking forward to open carrying. I've done it before without any problems, but would rather conceal. I need to get my wife to the range more often to hopefully get her interested in concealed carry.

I just hope there aren't too many California crazies running around Reno.

Doesn't Nevada recognize your concealed carry permit.

Yes, but my Illinois permit won't be valid once I become a Nevada resident.

Gotcha. I didn't know how that worked if you moved.

Look outside Reno for a place; Maybe Fernley would be a good start. It's not far to drive in to Reno

1. Take the Nevada CCW Course. At the same time; if the course supports it, make sure that you also get the paperwork for a Utah CCW Permit (This is common for many of the Instructors in Nevada to run classes that meet both States Requirements). By also applying for a Utah CCW Permit; you also pick up a few states that do not recognize Nevada's CCW.

2. File for your Permit immediately upon completion. It can take a bit of time; particularly in Clark County (Las Vegas area). I have heard that Washoe county is quicker; but not as quick as the Cow Counties. (Cow Counties are all counties in Nevada that are NOT Clark or Washoe).

3. You want to determine which county you want to live in (Buy your 10 acres in). If you &/or wife work in Reno (Washoe County); but live in Douglas, Churchill, Storey counties - or Carson City "Capital District" then you will need your CCW listed from those counties. It is still good in Reno/Washoe; but you are required to have the CCW connected to your residence address/county. If you initially establish in Reno and get your CCW there, then later buy property in another county; then you can have it changed but it will cost another fee.

4. If you want to buy property (your 10 acres) there are options in multiple counties; but I would recommend considering Storey County (Virginia City area) as taxes have been historically lower and there is more property available as a general statement (remember that the US Government OWNS 84% of the actual land in Nevada). Virginia City Highlands (a "Development" of 1 acre, 5 acre, 10 acre, and larger) is about 15 miles from Reno up highway 341 going towards Virginia City. The drive is about 17 minutes up a windy paved highway; plowed by the State during the winter. Drop me an PM/e-mail and I can share more if your interested.

I moved to Reno in '75 or '76. Just when they were working on the new MGM Grand. It was a boom town then. They said that the population went from 80 thousand to 200 thousand in less than a year. The parks were full of tents. You would see people coming out of their tents in the morning in their black & whites (black and white clothes ...all the casinos made their employees wear black and white). I worked on construction. We threw up apartment complexes by the dozens. Trying to get roofs over their heads. If you are not familiar with Reno...Beware of the winter storms. They don't get snow often but when they do...all steep hills. Big piles of cars on the bottom of the hills all smashed into each other. Slow motion accidents as the cars slid down the hills. I left in less than a year (couldn't handle gambling when I was in my mid 20's) I have no idea what is like now. I got to really love the town. I wish I could have stayed. Good luck. (And stay away from the tables)

I moved from Los Angeles to Fallon Nevada forty years ago and I still think it's the best thing I ever did in my whole life. Fallon is sixty miles from Reno and some people do commute, but you have to consider it turns an eight hour workday into a ten hour workday.
Google Stillwater Firearms Association to see pictures of our club owned range.
BTW welcome to Nevada.

You live in Illinois and you call Californians crazy?

Not all of them. Just the ones that hunt gophers.

you have 30 days to change your drivers licence once you move to Nevada.
I suggest that you take the required safety course in that time frame.

They have up to 120 days to approve you.

I promise, I will not hunt gophers in or around Reno, Nevada if you can promise to stay out of California.

Not gophers but Beldings ground squirrels. You hunt them over hay and alfalfa fields. You shoot until your trigger finger gets blisters while the plants are still small enough you can see the squirrels, usually in April (last year they came out early). They cost the farmers thousands of dollars per year. They are one of the worlds longest hibernating animals and they are only awake a few weeks a year. In many fields, the coyotes and badgers lay low all day and feast on the remains after sundown then the shoot starts again at sunrise, no hunting license required for these pests in Nevada and, I think, Utah as well.

A good friend of mine goes to northern Nevada every spring to shoot those little rodents. Not only do they welcome shooters, one farmer asked if he and his buddies could go over to his daughters farm to help eradicate the squirrels. My friend said the squirrels were so numerous this year you could shoot them with a pistol. Only the eight hour drive prevents me from going with them.

When you get to Reno, pack a lunch and drive over to California and enjoy the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Heck, go to Tahoe, or anywhere else around there. Just a beautiful place!!

I also recommend the monitor pass, but it closes in the winter. Get some fly rods and go catch some trout, shoot to your hearts content out to any distance, roam and wander as long and as far as you want without hitting private land. You are going to a great place.

You don't have to drive to California for the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Part of it is in Nevada. The eastern 1/3 of Lake Tahoe is in Nevada.

You don't have to go to the Sierras to enjoy the mountains of N. Nevada. There are dozens of ranges with peaks over 10,000 feet and plenty with trout streams even close to roads that never need to be planted because they are already full of trout. Ranges like the Santa Rosas, Jarbidge, Trout Creeks, Toiyabes, Monitors, all have streams full of trout wild as the desert wind. Even a "half-cripple" like me can get to the fine fishing. The trick is that the streams are often not obvious because the mountains look barren (trees never got to some like the Toiyabees since the last ice age). There is a website run by the BLM and the Univ. of Nevada that has webcams on top of a dozen mountains (some almost 11,000 feet) that are a wildfire warning system that lets you look at the mountain ranges. I believe the website is called Alert Wildfire.com but you can get to it by searching Cave Mountain, Jacks Peak, Fairview Peak, etc. Solitude is the name for what you will find. When you make it, consider going to the Nevada Cast Boolit Shoot in early June. NCBS is more fun than you should be allowed to have which is why I travel the 700 miles to get there then visit the mountains for a few days. To Love Life - maybe next June.

We are heading out in the morning. We aren't taking a trailer as we managed to get everything packed in the Jeep and a cargo bag on top.
I think we are going to stop at a car wash before we get out of Illinois to wash the dirt from our car and shake off our shoes.
