It's raining here, so no mowing the grass today. So, I sat down at my reloading bench.
I have an old CVA Frontier 50cal rifle. Believe it is pretty well shot out with some pitting.(Never threw it out)

Have some MMP Sabots for a 50 cal. Have some #6 shot and some fiber wads.
I weighed up the loaded MMP sabot with # 6 shot, along with a fiber wad. It weighed 150 grains total.
Thinking about shooting this combo with 50 grains with 50 grains of 2F BP. Shooting at a distance of 25 yds and see how it does.
What do you all think?

Think its lite on powder/shot ,try pattern @ 30 ft and work your way out .Might work with squirrel ,turkey not so much .Only pattern will tell but its a good way to spend the day trying /Ed

The twist will make donughts of your patterns really quick. Might work ok at 5 yds. A lighter charge might help a bit making it revolve slower.

50 grains is a pretty stout powder charge for this purpose.~~ I think?

I think that the 150 grain weight shot load is too small, smaller than a modern .410 caliber load of 13/16's of an ounce of shot = 3 inch shell.

1 ounce of shot weighs 437.5 grains and 3/4's ounce weighs 328 grains.

Generally people use equal volumes of powder and shot, with extra shot being added for better patterns.

With a .410 load, you would be lucky to hit paper at 7-12 yards due to the rifling.

For comparison, 28 gauge is .55 caliber and modern shells are loaded with 3/4's to 1 oz. of shot.

POWDER MEASURE SETTINGS TO THROW OUNCES OF SHOT:

 50 grain setting = 3/4 ounce of shot
 60 grain setting = 7/8 ounce of shot
 70 grain setting = 1 ounce of shot
 80 grain setting = 1 1/8 ounce of shot
 90 grain setting = 1 1/4 ounce of shot
 100 grain setting = 1 3/8 ounce of shot
 110 grain setting = 1 1/2 ounce of shot
 120 grain setting = 1 5/8 ounce of shot

Here are a few equal volume loads:
oz. shot-----Dr. powder-------Grains
3/4-------------2--------------55
7/8-------------2 1/4----------62
1---------------2 1/2----------68
1 1/8-----------2 3/4----------75
1 1/4-----------3--------------82
1 3/8-----------3 1/4----------89
1 1/2-----------3 1/2----------96
1 5/8-----------3 3/4----------102
1 3/4-----------4--------------109
1 7/8-----------4 1/4----------116
2---------------4 1/2----------123
2 1/8-----------4 3/4----------130
2 1/4-----------5--------------137

Too much powder - not enough shot
ditch the sabot
25 grains of powder
a decent heavy card wad
a lubed felt wad
3/4 ounce of shot
overshot wad
sneak up closer - 25 yards is too far for shot out of a rifled barrel
Do you want a pest load for round the house ? or are you just bored and fillin in time while it rains? :D
pest load you can do with 22 shot cartridges - snakes, rats, etc
