You might remember me, the guy that just doesn't get the point sometimes that posted over in leverguns (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=35024).

Thinking rather than throwing jacketed towards deer I'd like to give the cast bullets a try.

I'm still trying to figure all of this cast loading out, but I've got it worked to 1450ish right now.

What would be good for deer?

pushed through a sizer, shooting from a .32 winny special.

IMO, if you put the bullet in the vitals that will do just fine!

What distances do you plan on shooting?

between my tremor and the iron sights I'm praying for inside 8 inches past 175 yards.

so, not past that.

UCP,

I totally agree with Blammer. Shot placement is the key. I'd say that if you limit your shots to 150 yds or less you'll be fine if you place your shot in the boiler room. You might want to limit the distance a bit more too, but I kinda feel like that's a personal judgement call.

Good luck!

if you're going to shoot at 150 yds better get to know the drop on that combo.

It's a little on the slow side so the ballistic curve will be steep that far out.

I'd try for an extra 200 fps if you can. If not, it'll kill em good.

Thanks for your input.

I plan on see where it hits out to probably 200yards... have my less shaky friend toss a few downrange. Do some quick math and learn the curve. Seems i'll finally get to use the notches on the rear sight, rather than aiming 7-8 inches low at 100 yards (factory ammo hits high in this rifle).

I just really wanted to make sure I would "kill em good", rather than "wound em nice".

Westside Washington, they're not going to be getting too big... but after 2 years in the field not finding one, i'm tagging along with someone else that shows some promise... maybe i'll finally put some deer in the freezer.

I'll up and see what happens. Got me a cheap chrony and me and a co-worker (both associate electrical engineers) thought it'd be worthwhile to modify the thing so the electronics were remote... real easy, six wires and seems to not have miss adjusted anything.

When this box of 500 runs dry I'll have to get me a mold setup.

How fast depends on weather your driving a half ton, three quarter ton or one ton pickup.

I didn't see a 32 bullet on that page I'd use on deer past 50 yards. Unless you like cleaning severely leaded barrels, you can't get enough velocity from any of those bullets for 150 yard shots on deer.

why wouldn't they be a good idea on deer?

>why wouldn't they be a good idea on deer?

You'd get a max velocity from that plainbase bullet of circa 1550 - 1600 fps without barrel leading. It'd be fine for side-on shots at deer to 75 yads max, but you mentioned 150 yard shots. Retained energy of that bullet @ 1600 fps mv and @ 150 yards is circa 600 ft/lb.

To get circa 900 ft/lbs @ 150 yards you'd need a muzzle velocity of circa 1900 fps. At that mv, you'd have a nice gray bore from throat to crown.

Give that bullet an extra coat of Lee liquid Alox and keep mv to less than 1600 fps and max range on deer to 75 yards.

Thanks, 175 was my "there ain't no way I'm comfortable with that prayer" distance. 75 sounds a lot more like me.

Although i guess i might pack a few rounds with winter coats if the need is there.

Junior1942 is correct. Those are pretty hard case but are still PB's bullets. Accuracy will go and leading will probably start around 1600 fps (I'm not sure what cartridge/rifle you plan on using). The extra coat of LLA is a very good idea. At 1550 fps (hypothetical) at 70 yard zero will get you a 100 yard poi of maybe 3-4". That would be my max range with that bullet at that velocity. If that bullet had a GC and you could push to 2000-2100 fps then the 175 yard limit would be feasable.

I see you will be using a .32 Win Spl. Find a good gas checked boolit in the same weight range (170ish) and you can easily push it over 2K fps accurately with no leading. That should get you to 150 yds quite nicely. The RCBS 32-170-FN immediately comes to mind.

With the boolit you have selected, I'd stay closer in just like Junior says.

well, my mom's cousin just emailed me... looks like when i'm with him It's eastern washington, which means under 100 is lucky, out there I'll probably just go factory loaded, I know where they hit (avg 7 inches high out to 150).
For round these parts I'm not going to have eyes on anything past 100 so I'll take the cast. Thanks everyone for your input.

Personally I have a 32 winny and I do NOT think I would be popping deer at over 75 yards max unless you have a set of tracking dogs ready... or are hunting on fresh snow. That little boolit is just gonna be energy challanged out past 75. An old hunter told me years ago... Figure 1 grain of lead for every one pound of critter. And this was for woods/swamp hunting in Michigan where I grew up... THe more I hunt the more I think he was right. I would figure 75 yards MAXIMO !!!!

missionary so what you are saying is that for elk i should be using a 1,000gr boolit.????
that would be like 15" long in my 7mm.

1 grain per pound is a good rule of thumb for UP deer, but gophers and moose need a different equation. ;-)

I live in the UP and your math is all wrong. We use one beer for every ten lbs!!!

1500lb moose/1500gn boolit, OH yea I like it! I think Elmer would like it too.

My father-in -law seldom drives over 45 and gets all sorts of deer (why do I even hunt) so I recon that 720 mph should do in a pinch (1450 fps)...
