Lyman Sizing Die Part “I”

I got a used Lyman die for a 450 Lubricant-Sizer from a friend in another state. Unfortunately, the part “I” which is the rod to support then eject the bullet, had been mislaid and a wrong sized one had been substituted. The “H” die is marked 313 and I’m thinking I can take a piece of 5/16” drill rod (.3125”) and use it in place. Will the quarter thousandth extra clearance all around and/or the unhardened surface of the drill rod cause me any problems? I’ve got a bunch of bullets that need to be .313 diameter!! :-|

Don’t worry about hardened surfaces. I’ve turned down brass rod on the lathe to use as the ‘I’ part on some of my homemade dies.
They’ve held up for more than 15 years with no problems.

I have honed dies out as much as .003" and still used the original "I" part with no problem.

Just for reference.
You can buy .001" increment gage pins for about $3.00 each.
They are hardened and ground to exact diameters. All you have to do is cut them to length.
