Got a basket case 1886 Winchester in trade a few years back. The original barrel had been cut off so made a new octagon 30" barrel in 40-65. Got to the range for the first time this week to try it out. First shot on paper was 2" high and 2" to the right @ 100 yards. Didn't even try for a group, just started plinking at the 200 yard gong with a variety of someone ells hand loads. Had lots of fun and someday I might even work up a load for it. Seems a little heavy in the barrel and I'm sure I would feel it more if I filled the 30" mag tube.

John, great on you for bringing another vintage 86 back to life.

Pictures man ... pictures. Gunporn always appreciated.

A particularly nice chambering for the model '86. Yep! That's a lot of barrel hanging out there. Tang sights? Beach or Lyman combination out on the end of that barrel?

I'm with bigted. Love to see a pic or two.

Sounds like a grand project. Pictures would be wonderful.

What does your barrel slug at? I have one in 40-82. I have heard that 40-65 is the little cousin of 40-82, kinda like 45-70 and 45-90. I think I would be able to shoot some if I ever felt like it.

top is the 1886. I cut the rifling in this one and the groove diameter is .408", made out of 4150 steel
Middle is an 1873 that was found in the crawl space under a house that was tore down in town, The original barrel had bad lettering so it got a replacement with a liner in 32-20. Needs a mag tube. the forearm cap was held on with a nail.
Bottom is an 1885 that came to me in pieces with a 30-40 Crag barrel. I made the new barrel out of 12L14, one of the first barrels I made after making my rifling machine. It is chambered in 38-55 and shoots good.

Nice collection. The 1885 looks really nice! And the 1873 looks like it only needs a few parts to be complete. You're lucky you can make barrels, must be nice to have that skill! I appreciate seeing other peoples collections/rifles. Nothing beats some good old gun porn!

That's a lovely rifle you rebuilt there, John. Thanks for sharing the image. And thank you, too, Kev.

I owned an original '73 in 44-40 with a 30" barrel - it was also quite muzzle heavy to hold offhand. Probably why you don't see very many - 24" to 26" were more common in rifle lengths.

Nice work on your rifles!

Nice work!
12L14 barrel? Did not know that material was used for barrels. Pretty neat you use a material that has lead in it to shoot lead boolits.

!2L14 has been used in muzzleloading barres for a long time.

John, very nice. The 86 is my drug of choice. 33 takedown, 33 lightweight, 45-70 saddle ring, 50-100-450.

This was one of those 80% jobs. The action was never finished and didn't have a S/N when I got it so I got to put my own on it. Got tired of guys bragging about their low S/N so I made sure I had a low number. I added the EX so a collector would know it was not original. After I put the numbers on it I was informed that Winchester started with 0. It still needs the feed rails changed so it has not been fired yet.
Finished my 86 lookalike from a model 71. It has a 30" octagon barrel and mag tube, checkered pistol grip stock with crescent butt plate. I have not fired it yet, mostly because it is in 50-100-450 and I'm a bit afraid of recoil.

Hey..... I will shoot it for you We have one of your 71's in 50 AK. Also a 86 (jap). Have shot up to 525 gr at 1850 fps off cross sticks and standing.
A 450 is not bad at all.

John, don't be afraid of the 50-100-450 with my loads the recoil is about equal to shooting a 20 gauge shotgun. I used the medium loads recommended by Western Powder (they sent me the load data for it in an email, if you want it.) because my gun is old and I was afraid of hurting it. I am using the MP 508 grain hollowpoint, the RCBS 540 grain RNFP, and the Lee 500 grain RNFP with good accuracy.
