How does one use the buckhorn rear sight on a Winchester model 1873?
Edit - I think the OEM rear sight is a semi-buckhorn as the horns stand straight up and do not curve inwards.

I’ve just received a new M73 in 45Colt and was wondering what is the best way to hold the sight for a target at 50yds.

The sight has a very small notch down in the bottom of the buckhorn, I was thinking that’s the short range sight and for some yet undetermined longer range I would float the front bead even across the center line of the buckhorns.

Also the rear sight elevator has several stair steps, which position would be best to start a for a 50 yd target.

You always use the little notch. You set the distance by adjusting the elevator under the rear sight. That can only be determined by shooting at a target set up at about 25 yards to start with then move it out further, It's just a mater of adjusting the sight until you get it where you want it. Check out sight adjustment on line.

Thanks for that picture. I have tried to explain this procedure many times with full buckhorns (PEEPhorns). That is a wonderfull picture and id like to use it if you don't mind the borrow.
