A friend of mine asked me if this was a boolit mould. He said he got it when he was fourteen years old and cleaning his grandfather's house out after he died. His dad told him it was an old boolit mould at the time. He's hung onto this for about forty years now and still doesn't know exactly what it is. It's approximately two and a half inches long or so. I've never seen anything like it. Whatcha think guys?

If it's not a mold then I suspect some kind of doctor's tool for .....well you get the picture.

That would be a suppository mold. The doctor would make them ,and tell you where to stick them.

hehehe, I like that.
If it is a boolitt mold, I suspect it would be for a cannon. I would like to think there are more parts for it somehwhere. Holding onto that while the sprue cools would be intersting.
I saw a video on casting cannon shot with a four part mold. Three sides, a bottom ring to hold them together. It was for cast iron though. The projectile had to be lathe turned after it was cast.
Or possibly for grape shot. It might hold the balls while the mass cooled around them.
Sure is cool though.
Hang on to it, pass it down, keep history alive!

It looks like a cement fastener like an old style concrete anchor. Just needs more parts.

+1 on the supository mold. I guess you could pour it less than full to adjust size, it does look large if it's going in me.

Guys, I've got a genuine suppository mold*, an 8 cavity job and it looks nothing like that. First of all, such molds (brass or chromed brass) look like bullet molds, but with no provision for handles or sprue cutter given the low temperature mixture they use. Second, the cavities are generally ~1" long x .44" wide and tapered, sort of like the old sugar loaf/picket bullets. Third, they are held together with self-contained thumb screws for lack of a better description. Btw, you'd be surprised how often suppository molds are auctioned on FU-Bay as "vintage" bullet molds.

*My parents were pharmacists when part of the training actually involved making medicines (compounding) and forming them into pills or filling capsules with them. They also had to learn to make suppositories, which is how I came to possess my father's ca. 1939 suppository mold. Btw, it would be a good place to start if you wished to roll your own or cast wax bullets or maybe even gluelits.

what about those old counter weights that you find in old windows?

Are the two pieces evenly flat from top to bottom?

:coffee: Sure it isn't a Sharps mold? looks like it could have two wires that hold the halves together by fittin' in the grooves. 2&1/2 " is a lot of lead but, them buffalo weren't small either.

What's the diameter measure at?

If this is a bullet mould it is very very crude. If I went to the doctor and he made a suppository for me out of that thing we would be fighting. I still think it it some type of construction anchor. The ridges on it are part of why I think this.

Why sure itīs a bulet mold ... low velocity at a "prescibed" target. Always deadly with garenteed results.

Yes, they are on the edges that mate together. They fit together nicely to form the cavity if you will.

Well said, John :-D

My votes with you Carpetman, just because the 2 1/2" length seems about right for some reason.

How about for forming a large caliber paper cartridge? Paper, ball or mini, and powder.
