Have you got the grips? The ones made by Uberti (most) and Pietta are pretty close the way they come from the makers. Generally, if you try them on your frame they will almost fit over the frame. Try to slide them on from the rear toward the front, and most likely you can press them on almost to a flush fit with the front strap. Then push them upward toward the hammer. Most likely they won't go all the way up. What you'll need to do is remove the back strap (the bottom comes with it) and cut down the groove on the top/back of the grips, the long curved one, so that the back strap will fit deeper into it. This is a "cut and try" operation, and you'll have to do it several times until the back strap will enter the groove deeply enough to allow the grips to move forward enough to contact the back of the main frame and below the hammer. These grips are cut out pretty precisely on machinery, and usually almost no wood removal is needed inside the grips in the area of the front strap, bottom, or where the grips contact the main frame. Once you get them seated properly on the grip frame you'll need a fine point ball point pen and run it around the grip frame to mark where the wood is high. Remove them again and carefully sand them down to the line. This is a job that takes a little time and repeated removal from the frame, both for fitting and sanding. In summary, 95% of the fitting is in the curved groove beneath the back strap of the grip frame.
