View Full Version : Slight rant

OK, This isn't a big deal but I just want to rant a little bit.

I don't like 40 S&W casings !

There, I said it.

When I tumble 9mm brass and some 40 S&W get in the mix, the 9mm casings telescope inside the 40 S&W casings. When I tumble 45 ACP casing and some 40 S&W casing get in the mix, the 40 S&W casings end up inside the 45 ACP casings.

I have a pretty well calibrated eyeball and I can spot 40 S&W casings mixed in with 9mm and I can cull them out; but every now and then, one gets by.

I don't shoot that much 40 S&W and therefore I seldom load 40 S&W but it seems like everyone and their brother shoots 40 S&W. I try to avoid picking up 40 S&W when I police my brass but I inevitability get some.

I know,......1st world problem but I just wanted to rant.

I feel better now, thank you :-D

You are right, I never fail to have a half dozen, but mix in 380s with the 9mm and you just want to scream. I'd join.:-D

We need legislation ! All .380 Auto casings need to be steel and all 40 S&W casings must be confined to a special range !

.40 S&W Casings need to be pink for easier identification.

Yes the 40s and 380s mixed in my 9mm's is aggravating but it's the 2 or 3 berdan primed cases that always happen to sneak into my brass bag when I pick up at the range.

Yup, having .40 brass mixed in can be a pain in the hind end but even worse is .380 mixed with 9mm. Literally the bane of my reloading existence. I end up sorting a lot of range brass by nature as competitive shooter. I used to sit in front of buckets and sort by hand but I have upgraded to Shell Sorter's w/plates and what a blessing they are! You still have to dead with some brass nesting together but its all separated in the end.

I get itred of the 9 getting mixed with my 40. Or the 40 getting mixed with the BO. Or any 22 in the mix, especially for bottle neck brass.

Lyman used to offer mesh bags to put different caliber brass in so other calibers can be tumbled at the same time. I save mesh bags that fruit or onions came in. I cut them down and tie the bag top when the brass is in. I also got tired of .40 and 9mm cases getting `married` in the tumbler which is why I use this mesh bag trick.Robert

Those Lyman mesh bags were very handy. Perhaps they didn't sell; don't think Lyman has marketed them in a long time.

It seems to me that you need to dump some 32 long in there, as well as 32 acp.

Just fill the .40 cal cases with lead and use them as boolits for a .44 mag. Makes one heck of a wadcutter if loaded base forward, and a pretty potent boolit if loaded case down. Close to pure lead is best.:Bright idea:

45 Colt mixed in with 44 magnum is by far the biggest pain I have ever come across, even moreso than 380 in 9mm. You just can't really tell them apart other than by their headstamp. They are pretty much the same length, and the differences in case and rim diameter are really small.

I've had a few times with 9 inside a .40 inside a .45. Sometimes it's like a Chinese finger trap.

I use a universal depriming die, and RCBS shell case holders which have a tighter tolerance and reject 40 cal when depriming 9mm and 45 when doing 40.

I keep all my brass separate. When I pick it up at the range it goes right back in it's own box. I've picked up so much brass from .32ACP to .50AE since I was 3 or 4yrs old, that I can tell what a cartridge is by blind feel.

I've still got some of those LYMAN media "separate mesh bags". Use 'em sometimes. But I only tumble like size cartridges ; .45COLT & .45ACP, .38SPL & 9mm and so on. It's not hard.

Just get rid of all that undersized 9mm brass, problem solved. Unless you have a woman in the house, being the 9mm is a ladies caliber, you will need to keep some around. ;-)

Ha. Have the same problem and accumulated so many .40 that I thought I found a solution. I just bought a S&W M&P 40c. Just have to buy dies, moulds, etc.. Problem solved. Didn't say it was a good solution to the problem.

The Devil's Own is 45 acp with a small primer. For variety there is 9 MM Makarov for real frustration.

I used to shoot 40S&W. Now I remember why I got rid of them.
