Way back in 1978, when I first saw the Lyman Great Plains rifles I knew I wanted /needed one. But they were outside my budget.
Fast forward 40 years and I stopped by the local marina and Gun store to talk to one of guys there. Looking at the gun display I spotted a Greener shot gun, turns out it was a Chinese copy. But on the end of the rack was a muzzle loader.
Turned out to be a Lyman Great Plains rifle in 50 caliber, a true safe queen, unfired with the box and papers from 1983. A gentleman I had known for years had brought in his guns and folding knives to consign as he was moving to a retirement Community.
Two Ben Franklin's and the rifle is mine. I doubt that it will be fired, but it will be nice hanging over the fireplace.

Good for you. Percussion or flint?

You really ought to shoot it sometime. It might hook you. They are fun and bring us back to more simple pleasures.

Good question, it's percussion.

As for shooting it, I may. Depending on time available. The first gun I ever bought was a Colt Navy replica. I have a beautiful 45 call. I line that I don't shoot as it's too hard to clean.
And I found a very nice Hawes Navy replica in the house I am clearing out.
I love the smell of black powder smoke.

Nice find, congrats. I had the same kind of luck from a local message board, found a flinter in unused condition, just a few hanger marks. Same price as yours. I'm giving mine to my son when he leaves the Nat'l Guard as a thank you for his service.

I wish I still had mine, they love a .495 RB, with a .015 lubed pillow ticking patch, 50 grs of 3fffg for target work, 85-90 grains for hunting1

Yep very good deal. If the old Gentleman is a friend you should stop by his place and give him another Franklin.

Oh no...you can't just buy and hang that rifle. You need to shoot it and let everyone know how it went.

I second that. She is a shooter. Mine was a kit gun and 54 cal percussion. Great balance and shot like a dream. 80 grains under a patched .530 RB.

Son in law has it up in Alaska now. Gonna need to get another.

Serious tho ... go shoot her and the cleaning is pretty simple and takes not too long.
